I like the employees at HD more than lowes employees. In the sense that HD employees pet the dog when we bring her, and it seems like there are actually HD employees in the store, unlike the vast caves of Lowes where there are no employees to be found.

I like the Waterfront Lowes much more than the East Liberty Home Depot.

We have both within about a 2 mile driving distance. I think HD has overall a better selection of things, but they are fairly similar. Lowes is less of a traffic hassle to get to so we end up there more often now. At our old house it was the opposite.. HD was less of a traffic hassle so we went there more often.

The garden department at HD around here I think has a bit better variety wise than Lowes, but it's negligible.

Lowe's has a really nice section of vinyl tubing that you can cut by the foot; HD has nothing like that. Conversely, HD has a better selection of pre-cut wood, like 2x2 plywood squares, etc.

That said, if I'm going there for a specific issue - plumbing, electrical - I'm probably going to HD. Our location has some knowledgeable staff.

My experience has been that both Lowes and HD have equally unhelpful staff, and at times you can wander around for 20 minutes seeking assistance.

I understand why this is the case when my issues are around attempted DIY stuff, can't really expect these people working part time retail jobs to have experience doing actually house work. But when it comes to just trying buy a bath tub or an appliance? Then it's annoying.

I personally know nothing, I usually ask other shoppers that definitely have the appearance of some sort of handyman.

My experience has mostly been that when I need an appliance or vanity or something with a motor, someone helps me quickly. Those areas tend to have a desk with a worker or two milling around. I walk up and say “sell her a washer” and point to mrs meow. It works

The lumber section is a wasteland that never has workers to help me.

This is location dependent, obviously. The HD and Lowe's near me are both really good, and have helped me out in the past with oddball issues that I was stumped on. The HD near my parents is good, too. Their Lowe's, though? Awful in almost every area.

I'm an A$$phalt man myself...

Out of curiosity, what do I need to do to prep my driveway for a fresh coat? I plan to call some companies this week to get on their calendars. I have a few huge gouges from when I moved in (moving truck's hitch dug into the driveway until we got the thing at the right angle). Obviously, I'll get some patch stuff and fill those in, but do I need to clean the drive way? Fill in cracks? There are some tire depression marks where the car typically sits... fill those in? Any other prep before having a crew out to do it?
When I had mine redone, they added 3" to the existing driveway, since it wasn't what they considered complete; the original contractor who built the house only had a base layer installed, and didn't even use the correct size stone. The 3" they added leveled off the entire driveway:

Meant to ask a while back... what'd that cost you per square foot?

I'm a HD loyalist only because that was the most convenient store near me when I bought my first home. Got used to the layout, such that walking into Lowe's is like deboarding a plane in another country. Constantly staring up at the signs to see where I should go, or just follow somebody that looks like they are buying the same thing as me.

I paid $3300 for a roughly 480sf 2-car driveway, so just under $7/sf.

Funny, my local HD has a layout that's different than most other locations that I've been to.

Funny, my local HD has a layout that's different than most other locations that I've been to.
