We're just waiting on our AC unit to crap out. The furnace is a year and a half old (got replaced the winter before we bought the place). The AC unit is from '97, so it's only a matter of time at this point. My guess is during a heat wave in august.

We were in a similar spot. Our ac was from 2000. We preemptively replaced it this year with some stimulus money so we weren’t caught in 90+ degree heat without one.

Kitchen upgrade is halfway done. The cabinets are in, waiting on the countertops. In the fall we'll have new flooring, and the kitchen expanded slightly by removing the half wall.

I was going to ask if you painted. They look like two different colors.

As someone who also has white cabinets I hope your finish holds up. The oils and stuff getting on the paint on the high use ones (garbage can) are starting to wear the white away after only about 3 years.

Yep. I replaced the fluorescents with the flush mount a couple years ago. I only replaced with a single row, which was fine at the time. Now that we have new cabinets, the wife wanted two rows of lights. Did that on Saturday, which really brightened the room. Part of the flooring upgrade will involve new paint, so looking forward to that as well.

Already starting to worry about that. The stained cabinets were definitely sticky and covered with grease, but you couldn't tell unless you touched them

I have white cabinets too. nothing sucks more than skulking around the kitchen, looking for stains on the cabinets like inspector effing gadget, and trying to wipe them away.

hey man they look nice and everyone that sees your new kitchen will say the look nice. you will agree with them while deep down inside, you just hope no one outside sees a rando stain and judges you

Honestly (and my wife would finally admit to it too after a few drinks) it's more about the functionality of the kitchen than the look. Yes, they look nice and all and the quartz countertops will be very nice, but the fact of the matter is we have more space and a better layout. The island is bigger and will allow our kids to have breakfast and their chicken nuggets/mac n cheese lunch.

Mine were painted so worst case I just sand and repaint a few bad ones but that's why I didn't want white cabinets. My wife won that argument

i know that the chances are small, but does anybody have any experience with Aerus air purifying systems? We are considering Beyond Guardian Air (and possibly Guardian Angel) - and given the rather steep price I'd like to know if/how it works...

Horrendous bang sound coming from the garage this morning. I thought one of the bike racks fell on one of our cars.

Nope, just one of the garage door springs breaking. That was LOUD.

I think any large spring that breaks in your vicinity is a 'holy poop' moment. I had a coil spring snap on my car while driving and it scared the poop out of me.

Yeah, the spring was just broken in two, still on the axel or whatever. My first pass through the garage - looking for the bikes on top of our car - I didn’t even notice it. I know not to mess with those springs, so now we wait for the experts to fix it…

Isn’t it common practice to run a cable through the center of those springs nowadays to keep the spring from flailing around when it breaks?

outdoor deck had some rotting boards. I replaced them but am reading that I shouldn't stain the new boards for a while (they're pressure treated). is this true? the existing boards are a reddish stain

I give treated lumber a few months before painting/staining. If you were doing things by the books, you would have left the lumber sit in similar conditions as the existing deck for a few months so it got acclimated before installing them. But no human on earth follows that suggestion.

I did when I worked on my deck. Let it sit for about six months before firing a load of solid stain all over it.
