eddysnake's Thread of Stephen King

Postby eddy » Fri Apr 10, 2015 1:48 pm

and just like that a movie is coming...
Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman has found a franchise to sink his teeth into. Sony Pictures has teamed with MRC to co-finance The Dark Tower, Stephen King’s novel series set in a world woven with magic and revolving around the gunslinger Roland Deschains. Sony will distribute what is planned to be the first in a series of movies. A complementary TV series is also being developed by MRC.

I feel like we have gone through this cycle of it happening to being scrapped every year or so.

Yeah, this project is so huge that it's a thousand to one odds that it'll actually happen. And if it does, having Akiva Goldsman as the screenwriter isn't a good sign. ;)

Really wish HBO had stepped up for a 8 - 10 season series.

The article says the movie will be based on The Gunslinger. I don't think the screenplay could be much worse than the book.

Regarding the Dark Tower (full spoilers ahead):
Can you imagine the reaction of TV watchers when they see the ending where Roland is suddenly teleported back to the desert where the first book began? People would absolutely lose their freaking minds

McConaughey for Roland? That would certainly bode well for the series, I think they need someone big to carry this series so we actually get to see it finished.

Apparently they offered him the Roland and man in black and he likes the man in black...

They could cast McConaughey to play Odetta and I'm pretty sure he'd nail it.

I'm reading Drawing of the Three and it may be my favorite of the series. Roland basically acts like Buzz Lightyear in our world.

Enjoy. Do you read other King works?

Might I suggest reading Salem's Lot before book V. Actually, its more of a demand than a suggestion. Insomnia is Cliffs Noted pretty well in book VI. Talisman and Black House are good to read too but not as important as those events, while directly related to the tower, don't come up in the series.

I've read the Stand, Pet Cemetery, and a couple others.

The Stand will help you a little. Salem's Lot is a must IMO.

I'm interested to see the viewpoint of someone who isn't deep into King's work. This series is the culmination of everything he has ever written and will ever write.

Second the suggestion to read Salem's Lot first.
Go ahead and read the first 4 and then Salem's Lot. Also, don't judge the series on the first book. He was 19 when he wrote it and had no idea what it would become. The revised version pulls a lot from book IV which is almost all a flashback and some really important Roland back story.

Could you get Lena Dunham to play Mordred?
