NTP66's thread of IT

Not sure if this is the best place to post this but...

For about 5 days now I've been getting notices that someone is trying to access my Facebook account. It's always the same; emails with new codes to change the password followed by an email from FB's two-factor authentication system saying that someone logged in from an unrecognized device and uploaded photo ID, and FB asking if it was me. I go through the process of saying, no it wasn't me, then changing my password yet again.

To date I have:

Changed the password on all of my email address passwords.
Changed the password for my Google account (I used their strong password/save passwords feature).
Changed my FB passwords 10+ times.
Logged into my webhost/email provider and changed the password on that account.

This morning, after another hacking attempt, I changed my xfinity password in case they were somehow getting into my emails there. If this doesn't stop it, I don't know what to do. Any other ideas on what steps to take/accounts to check to stop this? And don't say "delete your FB." I advertise my books there and it's my primary source of advertising/income so it's a necessity.

I don't think you can do anything more than you already have, honestly. I get Microsoft alerts for people trying to access my account all the time. So long as they don't have my password and simply fail the 2FA part, whatever, doesn't matter.

NTP66's thread of IT

A little bored this morning, so I decided to clean up some of the records on my router, knowing that I've replaced a few things. First thing that stands out to me is that I have a lot of wifi devices that I have no idea what they are, lol. Guess I should have noted them when I first connected them, and most have MACs that don't link back to a company to help me figure it out. The second thing I notice is that with one of the more recent firmware updates, I can enable an ASUS skill in Alexa to do things like reboot the router, disable MAC filters, etc... none of which I can see ever being useful.

Just think of a MAC address like an IP address for hardware. Every single one is unique to that specific device.

I get what you are laying down NTP66... I do the same thing with the MAC addresses on my RT-AC56U

Holy hell, that’s an old router… is asus even updating the firmware on that thing anymore? I know Merlin no longer supports it in his custom fw.

Nope, I haven't had an update for a while. I have the merlin firmware on it now. I keep telling myself that I should get a new one, but this one still works fine, lol

I've got a weird one. My ROG Strix B650E-F motherboard won't let me update the BIOS. I updated it when I built it last fall, and didn't have any issues.

So this is what is going on. I go to the support site, and grabbed the latest non-beta drivers. I unzip and put the file on an empty flash drive. Restart the PC while holding down delete to get into the BIOS (it's crazy how fast a PC boots to Windows with a M.2 flash drive). Then go into the USB Flash BIos update under Tools, select the USB drive and file, confirm twice that I do want to update the BIOS, and then it briefly begins to process the file. It then shuts down completely, and turns the monitors off. I have to hard restart the PC and it boots to BIOS safe mode, where I go in and Save and Exit, and it boots back into Windows with the previous BIOS and settings saved (thankfully).

I've tried two different BIOS files and two different USB drives. Same result. I did some research on reddit and it looks like any kind of settings changes in BIOS will lead to this error, so I reset the settings to default two different ways ( F5 to reset to optimized defaults and manually turning off my RAM DOCP). Same result.

The only thing I’d try different is storing the bios update on the root of one of your local drives instead of a flash drive, assuming your bios is capable of that.

813/511 mbps. Considering we were paying $5 more for 200/15 from Spectrum, I'll take it.

Just tested on my pixel 6 on wifi and got about 500+ both ways and I'm not super close to the router. Nothing in my house is hardwired or I'd get better than that.

I had a scheduled power outage overnight, and my DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem never powered back on. So my ISP replaced it with a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem. Now my MoCA 2.0 devices no longer work. Based on my research, DOCSIS 3.1 uses frequency band than DOCSIS 3.0, and the 3.1 band also shares some from what MoCA 2.0 uses. I have Actiontec ECB6200 MoCA adapters (which the hardware versions I have are EOL and old at this point). The Actiontec tech support line suggested that I just needed different PoE MoCA filters, but I'm not so sure.

I'm not sure I really want to spend the money and hope that new MoCA devices/filters do the trick, just to have some other new standard (like DOCSIS 4.0) break it all over again. Or do I just spend the money to have someone come in to run a CAT6 cable between the floors of my townhouse? Has anyone had someone do a couple CAT6 runs like that? I have a townhouse, so it's not real accessible. Seems like maybe in the long run the CAT6 cables are the way to go.

Probably worth getting a quote for the cable runs, but you could always grab a new filter on Amazon to see if it resolves your issue. If so, replace the others. Worst case, return them for free on Amazon.

After further investigation, I don't think the MoCA route will work anymore unless I move my cable modem to another location in my house, and that location is the basement where the incoming cable from the ISP is located. Or I would have to run another coax cable from the outside junction box to where I want the cable modem (not worth it, would rather just run network cables). I can't have the incoming signal from the ISP be on the same lines that I am trying to use the MoCA devices (which is how I have it now, and how it worked previous to the DOCSIS 3.1 upgrade).

Anybody ever have to soundproof their server room?

We've been getting a few complaints that our server room is just too loud. I was kicking around buying acoustic panels for the door, but didn't know if I would be wasting money.

This is what I'm looking at: https://arrowzoom.com/products/arrowzoo ... 4070944833

There should be enough panels in this kit to do our MDF and IDF and maybe my office door (kinda joking, because of how thin our walls are in this office.)

Can't help with this question but does your org have plans to move to the cloud? The company I'm working with has moved everything to the cloud.
