More RAM is never a bad idea.

I'm now in a spot where I can hook directly into my router with an ethernet cord and I get really terrific speed from it, but sometimes my playback on CPU-intensive video players is just a touch, ehhh, bumpy...

I'm wondering if a RAM upgrade would be just the little push I need...?

3.40 GHZ i7 processor
8 GB RAM
1 TB hard drive
Internet speed is 200+ mbps

Unlikely that's the problem. It's more likely the GPU that your processor is running. Do you know which i7 it is?

That said, you could run Task Manager (Performance tab) while you run one of these tasks to see if you truly are maxing out RAM. I'd be surprised, personally.

Unlikely that's the problem. It's more likely the GPU that your processor is running. Do you know which i7 it is?

It says Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.4 GHz

I'm not sure if it's worthwhile, but I ran that Windows Performance Information thing...

My processor and RAM were 7.6, but Graphics was 5.5, Gaming Graphics 5.9. I'm not sure what to make of that, if anything...

Yeah, that performance thing is trash. That CPU is ancient, and the GPU is an Intel HD 2000. If you're heavy into video processing, which I think you probably are, you might want to consider this the time to upgrade.

Yeah, that performance thing is trash. That CPU is ancient, and the GPU is an Intel HD 2000. If you're heavy into video processing, which I think you probably are, you might want to consider this the time to upgrade.

When you have an onboard GPU can you modify how much system RAM is dedicated to the GPU?

Bleh, all right...and yeah, I just ran task manager or whatever while running this task, my RAM usage doesn't get above 33%, my CPU usage - outside of a couple of spikes - sits around 9 or 10%...

It sucks, because it's so close to being on point, that I was hoping just a minor change might do something...ah well, I'll see how much it bothers me, thanks for lookin...

Wait a second, are you also on Windows 7? That thing is basically non-existent in Windows 10 unless you run some Powershell commands to get the data.

Yes, this machine is Windows 7...I've had it for a little while now, maybe 5 or 6 years...

That pushes everything over the edge for me, then. W7 is end of support, meaning you won't even get security patches. The hardware is old enough that I wouldn't even risk an upgrade to 10, because you're likely to run into driver issues. Definitely time for a new rig.

How is your first monitor connected? I would avoid using VGA anything, personally. If your GPU has two digital ports (DP, DVI, HDMI), chances are you can plug one monitor into each and then use W10’s settings to extend your display and set monitors 1 and 2.

Looks like there is one HDMI, three display ports, and a DVI. First monitor is using the HDMI.

Okay, then I’d try HDMI and DP for your two monitors then. If both monitors only have HDMI, then your next best bet is a USB hub that has multiple HDMI ports. If it gets to that, let me know. I got one for my wife’s laptop that works like a charm.

Looks like I'll need the hub. Monitor only has HDMI and VGA. I probably should have done some more research instead of just buying what I already had, lol.

You’ve got a few options:
