I saw a Mythbusters where they studied fecal matter on toothbrushes. I've closed the lid ever since that.

If you’re worried about “fecal matter” being on something, I’ve got some bad news for yinz. That sh*t is everywhere. Toilet seat open or closed.

Well, think of the toilet seat as the toilet's mask helping lessen the viral fecal load.

Treating “data” as a plural word. I won’t do it. It’s a SINGLE collection of something. A “deck” of cards. A “flock” of seagulls.

Data describes a singular collection. Why is this happening and who among you is part of the problem?

What is the ruling we need here? Someone referred to a collection of various data as just data? I'm not sure I understand the question.

This is a quickly growing thing. "The data say that so and so is blah blah blah". " The data are surprising in this case."

And I don't want it to be a thing. Does 5AF think it should be a thing?

That's weird and I've never seen it referenced like that.

Anytime someone says “the data says...” I always think to myself “is this person the only one that was the data whispering to them?”

It is definitely used by people who also have "deliverable" in their vocabulary.

Hmph. I use deliverable.

I have a Masters in project management so I'm not 'normal' though.

Once I got a gig at a legit corporation in a leadership position, I am 100% about corporate speak and think these terms are actually very useful. Deliverable, level set, download, "levers to pull", "put my thumb down on"...I'm just as insufferable as you'd expect.

Yeah they’re utilitarian terms that people confuse for some kind of braggy vocabulary.

Executive types don’t like to create mythology (unless they’re in marketing). It’s all just shorthand so meetings can end sooner.

But you would say “The data are...” not “The data is...” if you want to be correct.

YOU WOULD!

I wouldn't. Someone made this decision at 5:30pm on a Friday without asking because everyone went home for the day.
