I chucked an apple in the woods this past June in new Hampshire while driving. I think I may remember one other time I did it. I don't think I would throw a banana peel, don't need any animals slipping and breaking a bone.

I grew up in the country, and I'm going to agree with count2infinity, eddy, blackjack, and mikey that an apple core into the woods is fine, but on a city sidewalk it's not. My grandmother never put apple cores/peels into the trash; she tossed them outside under the bird feeders. The squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, deer, etc. would make sure they weren't there by next morning. Same for most other fruit and vegetable scraps.

Every day I drive a wooded area. In the fall, I eat an apple while driving. I then dispose of core into a wooded area.
