SNL has never been good in my lifetime. (By lifetime I mean when it would've been relevant, so aged 13+ or 1995 if you're doing the math)
I was going to argue and show you how that's simply not true but I have a feeling that whatever I say won't change your opinion.

Well, yeah, it's an opinion based on my observations over the last 25 years. It would have be be mighty convincing.

There are high points, but the bulk of it is drivel, schlock. I'd say since 2000 there might be a total of 45 minutes of actual content that makes you laugh. And that's almost entirely Black Jeopardy. And for every one of those skits, there are 10 of Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer.

Melissa McCarthy performed as Sean Spicer a total of four times. :pop:

And the main cast of "your time" so let's say 95 - 2005 included Will Ferrell, Tracy Morgan, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, etc. It also included the tail end of Sandler, Spade, Farley, Myers, Hartman, Norm McDonald, etc.

Celebrity Jeopardy is still my favorite SNL skit of all-time, and I'd watch every single one of them again. Even the ones with Fallon, who remains unfunny.

nocera just proves my point, imo.

Ferrell, Morgan, Poehler, Fey, etc. are painfully unfunny. You left out Fallon whose gimmick was just laughing through sketches instead of performing the lines.

SNL is cheap to produce and competes against nothing. It will keep pushing mediocrity in perpetuity.

Ferrell as painfully unfunny...nowhere to go with that.

Like...Old School is a pretty great movie, still, and a lot of it is because of his particular style of comedy. If you’re saying he’s just irredeemable, that’s a dead end statement.

Comedy ages poorly, so a show that’s been on for 40 years is gonna be a minefield for this type of discussion.

...but also, Steve Martin was a good comedic actor who could read lines well but he was never that funny of a person and neither were most people in his era. #DeadEndPoint

He’s funny if you’re old enough. Otherwise, you look at something like the King Tut character and just assume everyone in the 70’s and 80’s was brain damaged.

This SNL discussion could have a big crossover with the Boomer rock discussion in the music thread.

But I agree with a lot of what is said - we tend to think SNL was funniest when we watched it in high school and college age. For me - and I graduated from Clemson 25 years ago today - I'm talking early-to-mid 1990s. But I still remember it being hit or miss, even with that great cast of the era.

And for damn sure the music guests were better back then. I remember the odd musical guest getting a third song performance. :pop:

I think the outrage over opinions on TV and Movies is probably the worst party about post-nobody 5AF

I think this is true for a lot of things. Things are always better from your childhood. Music, movies, tv shows, etc.

My favorite cast from SNL was the early to mid 90s with Sandler, Myers, etc. I remember my parents though saying they were ok and the cast from the 70s was the best. But then I talk to younger people and they feel more recent casts are good, where I think they are poo.

There is a whole generation of people that think Phil Collins' best work is the Tarzan soundtrack. I **** you not. They had no idea he was in Genesis, or that he was is one of the best drummers in rock.

Didn't Phil Collins accidentally invent the gated reverb snare sound?

The best song on Tarzan is Trashin the Camp... the only Tarzan song not performed by Phil Collins. The lyrics are "sung" by Rosie O'Donnell. So much of that statement feels wrong, but I know it's right.

The only thing I like about Steve Martin is that he loves bluegrass music. He's not great at playing the banjo, imo, but he's not a terrible listen, either.

I'm not engaging at the individual show level. SNL is bad and it doesn't affect me at all because I don't watch it live start to finish. What gets me is that it's a symptom of just how plodding and lame society is as a whole. Whether it be Big Bang Theory, SNL, the endless police procedurals, whatever. The fact that they move along unchecked for so long demonstrates there is a market for mediocrity and that bums me out.

Shmengy...... in the last month you have come in here hot saying Up is a bad movie, and Steve Martin isn't funny.

Trust us. This is a 'you' problem.
