If you are using the app... It loads but it isn't cultivating any new content.

“Routing” is just networking stuff. It’s not like source code was deleted. They’ll be fine. It’s just that it takes a while for everyone’s internet to find them again.

even if source code is deleted, they use version control and can almost certainly recover it all

people who think Facebook is down forever don’t understand how many redundancies and failsafes are in place

As tough as school was at times for me, coming of age at the dawn of the modern Internet was like the best of both worlds. I can't imagine worrying about social media as much as teenagers and even tweens do now.

I think it was shmenguin that argues that the pervasiveness of social media has permanently altered human brain chemistry. Hard to argue.

I have a naive fantasy that I can stop it from happening to my kids. But you have schools integrating devices, social stigmas, etc.

It was way different when I was in high school (early 2000’s) to when I was teaching high school (late 2000’s).

The biggest issue with social media at that age is never being able to turn the drama off. You’re not safe from bullying in your own home anymore. The “easy” answer is just stay off of it. But that’s not really all that easy.

I think plenty of kids avoid drama. Most kids are just *there* in high school. It’s more like continual engagement that’s the issue. Becoming obsessed with whatever is on your phone - whether it’s Instagram, tik tok, porn, candy crush, whatever. It’s a crutch for kids and it ain’t going away.

Absolutely.

I am ashamed to admit this, but I felt pangs to check my phone while I was in the movie theater the other day. That never, ever happened to me prior to COVID. Now, I'm conditioned to play on my phone during TV shows and movies, because I'm at home (usually) watching things now.

It's scary to me, and I realized it was happening. Most people don't feel it or care enough to change their behavior.

I try to leave my phone upstairs in my bedroom or somewhere when I'm with my family or doing other things, just because I do find myself constantly trying to look at scores, or read through twitter, and hell, check out this board or pantherlair.

But honest to god, these tiktok challenges and other things, yikes. I couldn't ever imagine going up to hit a teacher (or anyone for that matter) and then have it on film. These people are idiots.

Like others said yesterday, we did stupid crap as a kid, but nothing that caused bodily harm or permanent damage. We'd egg cars, toilet paper stuff, etc, and that was usually devil's night.

When I was your age I never chased a boy or called a boy or sat in a parked car with a boy.
