TIL about “The Gang of Eight” and how it might have helped in Mike Johnson doing a 180 on Ukraine aid. Neat.

@Shyster Are objections in opening statements a typical/normal thing?

We were taught they are procedurally allowed but should be used very sparingly as they leave a bad impression on the jury. So pick your spots and use discretion.

I agree with dodint. They're not common, but objections to opening statements are not prohibited.

Thanks, always interested to see if what’s being reported truly is what it’s made out to be.

Haven't watched the episode yet. Glancing at the title...he's breathlessly covering the coverage, right?

It's nice he's taking a night off from talking about Israel, but...c'mon man.

He is, largely making fun of what they're covering, but then at the end there's a nice little twist.

seems like anti-Israel protests are getting out of hand now. Columbia University had to cancel in person classes for two weeks (and having seen some examples, a lot of it gets into anti-Semitism territory)

kind of sad that anyone falls for the over the rhetoric like that

Do you have some examples of this? I'm curious what the anti-Semitism looks like... Is it just anti-Israel/anti-zionist or straight up "Kill all Jews" kind of stuff?

this is a post I've seen a bunch on reddit recnetly
For posterity, here's some of the examples of extremism within the activist movement at Columbia. This goes beyond "pro-Palestinian advocacy" into calls for, and actual, violence.

Note, there are varying degrees of it being individuals vs. the group, but these are the type of people in the crowd there and many of them are indeed group chants. I have also set aside some widespread ones (from the river to the sea) that are disputed in character. That said, many many many of these are coming from large groups of students within the main quad (which has been locked down to only students/professors)

Candidly some sources are not great in terms of me agreeing with the viewpoint of the tweeter, but they contain relevant and real video:

Physically assaulting an Arab Israeli

"From the river to the sea, Palestine is Arab!" / "Resistance is justified"

"Let it be known that it was the Al-Aqsa Flood that put the Global Intifada back on the table again. And it is the sacrificial spirit of the Palestinian Freedom Fighters that will guide every struggle on every corner of the earth to victory."

"We are all Hamas!"

"Yehudim yehudim [(Jews, jews)] go back to poland"

Includes people / groups that invited an actual, no hyperbole terrorist to speak (member of PFLP) https://www.jns.org/columbia-suspends-f ... lp-member/

Light things on fire / "intifada revolution there is only one solution"

"On Oct 7th, Palestinian resistance in Gaza broke free (crowd cheers) [.....] we intend to do the same"

""We say justice, you say how? Burn Tel Aviv to the ground!" / "Hamas we love you. We support your rockets too!" / "Red, black, green, and white, we support Hamas’ fight!"

"Long live the intifada! Intifada intifada"

"Go back to Europe!" / "You have no culture, all you do is colonize"

Have posters with the faces of PFLP and PIJ spokesmen (designated terrorist groups)

"From Yemen to Gaza, globalize the intifada"

"Never forget the 7th of October. That will happen not 1 more time, not 5 more times, not 10, not 100, not 1,000, but 10,000 times! The 7th of October is going to be every day for you"

"Al Qassam [(Hamas)] you make us proud, kill another soldier now" / "from the river to the sea, palestine will be arab"

Student proudly rocking Hamas logos

"Resistance is justified" (again...)

"protesters on the sidewalk chanted “From New York to Gaza, globalize the intifada,” next to a cardboard sign that read, “Inspired by Palestinian resistance.” https://www.timesofisrael.com/over-100- ... um=twitter

And as a reminder, the student groups organizing these protests (CUAD and SJP, among others) released a letter on October 9th in support of the 10/7 attacks. ("We stand in full solidarity with Palestinian resistance", "Despite the odds against them, Palestinians launched a counter-offensive against their settler-colonial oppressor", "We wholeheartedly condemn the email sent [...] on October 8th that [...] obfuscated Palestinian resistance as “terrorism”)

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RcX ... _vZFk/edit
I wouldn't say that I agree that everything in this list is an example of anti-Semitism, but there's enough here that it's disappointing to read. In general I'd say I'm pro-Palestinian liberation and while Israel is absolutely committing war crimes, seems like a lot of the protests in the US specifically are starting to cross the line

just disappointing all around. humans are dumb

Yeesh... just watched a few of those. Yeah, I'm certainly not saying there's zero antisemitism at all. Clearly, from some, there is. Although, I don't know how much of it is because they're Jewish or how much of it is because Israel happens to be a Jewish country that's in this war. Kind of a chicken or the egg thing.

Like in America after 9/11... was there an anti-Muslim sentiment? Absolutely. But it likely wasn't because anyone here had a deep hatred for Muslims prior to that. It's because the people that attacked did so in the name of Islam.

That said, yes... humans are dumb.

It's also part "anyone who is antisemitic feels more emboldened to act that way now" too. I mean, just going off your 9/11 example: There's no historical precedence of islamophobia pre-911 being anywhere near the already large presence of antisemitism that's existed this last century.

Trump violation of gag order hearing. He has to pay $1k for each violation. Gets out of the hearing and immediately violates it again. Please stop with the slaps on the wrist and stern finger wags. He deserves at least a night in jail. Any other person would have been there already.

FTC just voted to ban non-compete agreements

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ftc-noncom ... ement-ban/
Federal regulators on Tuesday enacted a nationwide ban on new noncompete agreements, which keep millions of Americans — from minimum-wage earners to CEOs — from changing jobs within their industries.

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday afternoon voted 3-to-2 approve the new rule, which will ban noncompetes for all workers when the regulations take effect in 120 days. For senior executives, existing noncompetes can remain in force. For all other employees, existing noncompetes are not enforceable.

He would probably like that to rile up his supporters even more.

He can sell one pair of Trump sneakers to pay for a violation. $1k is hilariously low.
