Can't remember if I told this here before, but when our cat died a few years ago, my wife and I decided to bury it in the backyard. We didn't really think it through, though. I ended up renting an auger from HD to get the hole deep enough. It was pouring rain on a Tuesday night, all the while my neighbor was looking out his back window wondering wtf I was doing. Must have thought I was one of the Klopecks from The Burbs.
I was 100% expecting this story to end with 'so anyway, raccoons stole the cat's body'.
Nope, but we did have a patio put in about a year and a half after we buried the cat and warned the contractor that he may unearth some cat bones.

In my defense it was trash day

Man, this got me good for some reason. At least the hamster had the courtesy to die on trash day...I would have given him a proper burial just for that consideration.
I lol'd too.

A good friend of mine was a park ranger at a beach park in NC. His dog passed of old age, and a mutual friend of ours offered to take the body out to one of the secluded parts of the beach and bury him.

Fast forward a few weeks. Big storm blows through. Something washed up on the beach and a guest calls a park ranger....
My park ranger buddy responds. It turns out the friend who did the burial wrapped the dogs body in a neoprene surfboard carry case taken from the lost and found before burying it. Turns out the case preserved the partially decomposed body and my park ranger friend got to identify the remains of his own pet. Again.

*gag*

Today is the first day in over a year that our older dog will be left at home all day for 8ish hours with no one there. (Our younger dog goes to doggie day camp). I'm fully expecting some poop piles when I get home this evening.

Potential stupid question coming from ya boy meow. Is there a way to know if a dog is going deaf other than telling his name at him from ten feet and him sleep through it?

Maybe he doesn't like his name, but I guess that's what you'd get for naming your dog meow

My co-worker's kid went to grab something out of the car yesterday morning. The family dog jumped in thinking they were going for a ride. The kid didn't notice and shut the door. They couldn't find the dog all day, it passed away from heat exhaustion in the car.

Ouch.

Yeah, it's heartbreaking. They're very compassionate people. They rescue goats and stuff like that.

I would have to sell the car and would consider offers on the kid.

I know you guys are just joking (mostly) but I feel bad for the kid. He's probably just as devastated.

Pet owner's diary.

Number of times I have now had to say "Damn it, which one of you pooped on the floor" = 2.

Yep. My white trash neighbors have been setting them off since 6pm. But they only set off 1 or 2 at a time, after which my dog paces for half an hour. Then he calms down. Then they set off one or two more. I wish they'd blow their hands off.

I'm neither a dog person nor a fireworks person. But if you're on Facebook or Nextdoor dodinting about fireworks scaring your dog (or waking your children), then said dog (or kids) better have never made any noise where another person could hear it.
