I had the entire heat shield from my pontiac vibe just fall the f*ck off the other day. Called the mechanic that I usually go to. They're out for a couple weeks hunting in Wyoming. Doesn't seem like a huge deal. Is it a huge deal?
Cars & Bikes, Driving & Riding
Not a huge deal. But you may have heat transfer to other parts and accelerate their life cycle.
But, it's also super duper easy to fix so just take it anywhere.

Depends on which shield this is - the one between your car and the exhaust, or a lower heat shield that is under your exhaust? If the former, I probably wouldn't make any long trips on it before fixing it.I had the entire heat shield from my pontiac vibe just fall the f*ck off the other day. The dealership my wife uses told her one of her exhaust clamps rusted off and she needed to replace it. They told her it'd be $50. Thankfully, she actually told me right away, so I called them to tell them not to bother, and that I would do it myself for the cost of the $4 clamp. Go to pick it up later that day and they had put a clamp on for free. I can only imagine how many people paid for something like that.Source of the post But, it's also super duper easy to fix so just take it anywhere.

It's the lower one between the exhaust and the road. I have an inspection coming up, so I plan to just take it in with that and be like "Here... this fell off". But that's the first week of September.
I only drive this car to and from work (10 minutes) and maybe grocery shopping (20-30 minute drive max).

In that case, don't park on a dry, wheat field...

If you live on a farm, I guess it's more of a possibility, but that's the only scenario in which I could see a missing lower heat shield really cause an issue. I'd still have it repaired, but it's not as urgent as the other side of the exhaust.

AJ did it in The Sopranos.

I hope these prices go down at some point. I'm a couple years out from looking at trucks.

My Credit Union offers a vehicle shopping service, which I signed up for when I bought the new Mazda. Every Mazda dealer in an area from Youngstown to Butler to Greensburg to Little Washington was on my phone and email. Didn't get a better deal then self negotiating. Seemed like just a lead generator for car dealers.I made an online inquiry about a new Subaru just because...and holy ****... text messages, phone calls, emails out the wazoo within like 30 minutes from our dealer.
I told the person who kept reaching out that I appreciate it, and I know it's her job to followup/pester me, but I was just looking online to see what was out there. Plus I will only deal with the sales person who has sold both my wife and I our last two vehicles. She has earned our repeat business.

Those really aren't big repairs... should be about a $250 job, max.Took the Elantra in for inspection and it'll need it's first big repairs. Tire rods and ball joints in the front end are shot.

In parts, sure. Labor is where the cost comes in for sure. I also don't have the tools to do the work or I normally would.
Also, I should specify that it wasn't the only work being done. I also had a check engine light on that had to do with the catalytic converter, and there was a spot in the exhaust system where to flanges were coming apart and a gasket needed installed between them to correct the loud noise from the muffler.

Compared to doing it on the car, a water pump upgrade on the engine stand is super easy, barely an inconvenience.

Hah, I got cocky.
Ended up busting a stud that I had to drill out. Luckily I have the old motor still around so I had an extra set of studs and nuts on hand.

This is a ridiculously dumb question, but I'm pretty stupid so...
There's a spare, bare bolt on my positive battery terminal set up. It would be perfect to connect a winch, but I need to put a nut on it to hold the connector in place. Can I put a nut on that without shocking myself and/or blowing up my battery in my face?
Commence laughing at my idiocy.

Remove the negative battery cable when doing the fastening and you will be fine.
