2. DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak - almost as untouched as Wilt's record
3. Gretzky's 215 points in a season - I didn't realize he and Mario own the top 13 spots in terms of points in a season
4. Russell's 12 championships - oy. Greatest champion in sports
5. All of Jerry Rice's records - did it 20 years before the NFL became a passing league

Edit: I read this as most unbreakable record. While it was a great record there are other accomplishments greater than Cal Ripken playing in 2632 consecutive games.

Wilt's 100 points is behind the 2-4 listed in the initial post. The 215, as has been me tioned, is not gretzky's greatest record.

I don't think any of the first three will be broken, but DiMaggio's hitting streak feels like the most impossible to reach.

Wilt was a total physical freak compared to the rest of the players and that will never be replicated. 99's were a cosmic collision of the sickest ability imaginable and a time/place that allowed for so many points being racked up.

Hitting in 56 games is almost impossible to comprehend, in terms of the psychological pressures and pure talent required for that level of consistency.

Bob Beamon's world record was beat by Mike Powell in 1991, but in 1968, his long jump measured 29 ft 2.5 inches beating the old world record by almost 8 feet. That is incredible to think how far ahead of his time he was (still 2nd place all time)

Also, the standard deviation in talent levels in all sports has been decreasing over all of these decades. One player being able to be *that* much better than anyone else is increasingly less likely.

I prefer single season records or streaks over career totals. That's why I chose Gretzky's 215 over career points.

Career totals speak more of being lucky not getting seriously injured (Lemieux, Griffey, Woods come to mind first in terms of being unlucky)

Of course that's probably dumb thinking...

Wilt's and Dimmaggio's streaks are more 1a and 1b for me. The closest to Wilts was Kobe at 82 and Pete Rose at 45 was the closest to DiMaggio, so it's actually close proportionally too. Gretzky's records are pretty safe barring huge changes in the NHL, Russell's rings are safe because there is so much parity in basketball but Rice's records are eventually doomed. One of these years were gonna get a Brady/Moss type combo but instead of a few years they'll play their careers together

The state of the league, circumstances of the game, and general mystery of it all really cheapen wilt's record for me. It wouldn't have even occurred to me to put it in this thread, because no one knows anything about it.

The mystique raises it for me. The fact that no video exists, just an image of Wilt holding up the page that reads "100" is both depressing and enthralling.

Not to mention it is 22 more points than his own personal second best

There are many newspaper articles from the day after re: Chamberlain's game, plus official NBA documents and a recording of the radio broadcast (at least the 4th quarter of it)...I never understood what the controversy was exactly...?

Considering the make-up of those Oiler teams, I have a really hard time counting most of his scoring records as all that incredible. I'm 1000x more impressed by Mario scoring 199 on the Pens with Bob Errey on his wing, or Bobby Orr scoring 139 in the 70s as a defenseman.

In fact, I probably only rate Gretzky as the 4th or 5th best player in NHL history and could probably be talked into lowering that.

There is a guy out here who had tickets to that game (played in Hershey, iirc), but missed the game because of car trouble or something. He is now a Laker's season ticket holder..... and gave away his ticket for the game where Kobe scored 81.

Woulda coulda shoulda, I know, but add in games lost for freakish health reasons and Lemieux would have figured more prominently. It's hard to comprehend, but he played fewer than 1,000 career games; the next guy up the list of top scorers played 600 more games.

There is an "iron four" that are absolutely untouchable in every way in hockey history. Gretzky, Lemieux, Howe, Orr. The fifth place player is a full tier (and then some, maybe) down from there...you're a knowledgeable and conversational gentleman, so I say this with all due respect, but there's no case that could reasonably be made for Gretzky to be 5th...
