That was a fascinating read, mikey, and I feel like I have a more fulsome understanding of why you are the way your are.

Have you formalized your writing process more, or still keeping to the ad hoc notes-on-a-phone thing?

Haha thanks. Um, I wouldn't say "formalized". I just need a means of remembering stuff. I've forgotten too much stuff. So now I think of something and I jot it down. And then when I want to sit down and write something or kind of work something out, I'll scroll through and just kind of expand on the idea a little bit and see where it goes if anywhere. Or I'll take a seed of an idea and just throw it into a conversation and see where the people I'm talking to take it and then where I take it from there and then kind of putty scrape it down into something that might work as an on-stage joke, if that makes sense. It's like throwing a quarter into a slot machine really...

I can't wait to play the "spot the mikey" game once the theaters and open mic venues open back up (though I very, very rarely attend the open mic bar scene).

Yes, a lot of pgh stand-ups just talk about how miserable they, and many (mostly dudes) confuse "edginess" for good comedy. But there are definitely some solid local stand-ups.

I would've loved to have observed an afternoon of Gary Gulman writing the state abbreviations bit, especially the sidebar piece about Dottie the sassy secretary.

"You mean 'the minute'?"

I've heard it took him something like 20 years to pull it all together.

I really appreciate comedians because it's more than just writing the material, it's the delivery that really seals the deal.

There are times when it seems being a comedian couldn't be all that hard. I have come up with great ideas for a joke before, but when I try to tell the joke in my head, I can't even make myself laugh. There's just something to the lead up and delivery of a joke that makes a comedian a comedian.

I'm sure all of you have done this - think of a time you saw a comedian, and remembered a joke you wanted to tell your friends. You tell the joke, and your friends give you that look where your only response is "you had to be there". That's what I'm talking about. The way the comedian puts it all together and you feel like you are there when it happened; it becomes more than just telling jokes. You're a storyteller.

Yeah, I actually practice a ton of deliveries. Sometimes I don't have a joke for them, so I'll credit the comedian that came up with the joke and then say it (just so no one says I'm a Schumer or a Mencia)...like I practiced the Jeselnik (Pittsburgh boy I think) delivery, but I have no jokes for that. So I can't practice it without one of his. I love telling the motorcycle one so much and it gets a good laugh because it's such a great misdirection.

I don't have the presence to give that type of delivery though. But it was fun to work with it for a bit. I'm just not comfortable with the silence and the material that fits that rhythm is really limited through my eyes. I really think you have to be taller too for some reason...I don't know, it just doesn't fit me. But it was a worthwhile exercise...

But you're right, it's all about story telling ability and when to hit certain notes and emphasize certain things. There's a song quality to it in some ways...

Jeselnik’s in a class of his own in terms of delivery. How he can say some of the **** that he does and keep a straight, emotionless face is half of the reason I love his act.

Delivery is so much of it. Mulaney is someone who has good material, but delivery and overall demeanor really makes his act. Of course, you can say that about any great comic.

Watched Jim Jeffries' new act on Netflix last night, "Intolerant". It was outstanding, and I recommend it.

We had tickets to see Jeffries March 13th. It was postponed the day before, then rescheduled to August 7, and then just recently canceled outright.

I can't wait for things to be things again.

I see there are a few of this Jeffries guy shows on Netflix, ok to fire up any of these or would one work better for never hearing any of his stuff?

I'd go chronological, because he references earlier material in his later stuff and tells stories based on it later. He has some lengthy yarns in the later special or specials...

I have been discovering old Albert Brooks clips for the first time. Had no idea how hilarious he was, especially earlier in his career.

Check Gulman's recent HBO special (I bet you would be able to find it even without HBO subscription). It talks about his life-long battle with depression (and not just mild - pretty much depression with capital double-D). Funny, but really scary at the same time.

It turns out that I like a number of comedians with depression/anxiety issues - Gulman, Bo Burnham, Maria Bamford, Demetri Martin (well, in his case maybe not depression - but if you listen to his "If I" special on Youtube - pretty much a TED talk - about how he studied in college and almost became NYU-educated lawyer - he clearly isn't an ordinary guy... :) )
