Working/Living in Pittsburgh

Postby doublewinder » Sun Jul 31, 2016 6:20 pm

Was offered a job in PIT and trying to decide if the economics make sense.
I currently live outside DC, and as a single guy, in the suburbs, 52-55 gets you a comfortable salary and nice apartment, closer to 60K in the city.
What about PIT?
If I work in downtown PIT, where would I want to live as a single young adult and what rent/salary would I need?

Again I know the figures I need in DC/I-95 which is 52-60....but what about PIT?
Is 40 comparable or 45?

Thread could use a poll after various areas of Pgh are suggested.

If you're making 60K in the DC area the equivalent income in Pittsburgh is a shade over 40K.

I'm not single, and I haven't looked at rentals in a while since we bought a place a year ago, but my wife's fellow medical residents who are single and who all make ~$50K/year live in Squirrel Hill, Shadyside (though with roommates), Lawrenceville, and the North Side.

When we were looking at places to buy last year, there were some nice condos in the Strip District and Downtown that didn't seem worth it to buy, but might be worth renting. Both of those areas have become much more lively.

Yea, Lawrenceville (although it's having a resurgence), Southside would be places you could live. Honestly, you could also Google or use rent.com to get a budget built to see how much you'd need to live comfortably.

Rents in Lawrenceville range but for a 1BR you can expect $600-1000+ per month depending on your standards. If you don't mind roomates you could pay as little as $400. Tons to do there and not far from downtown, north side, shadyside, Bloomfield, friendship, etc. Super friendly too. Very hipster. My barber is there, Mr Grooming

No roommates, looking for what the cost would be for a 1 bed, with parking, convenient to work and not isolated.

There are a lot of new apartment complexes springing up in Shadyside/East Liberty. Especially near Google (Bakery Square).

The apartments near Google have access to good restaurants, public transportation, Whole Foods, Target and have a ton of amenities.

I think they start at $1000 for a studio and go up from there.

You're better off Googling "Places for rent in Pittsburgh" and get the prices and what you're looking for lol.

If you have a car, this is a very nice place and is a 15-20 minute drive from the city.
