Interesting article in the LA Times about Uber drivers:

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/topofthe ... ft13a-4gp1

EDIT: Wrong link. This is the op ed piece about Uber and Lyft.
"I feel morally wrong taking advantage of contractors."

A few lines later..... "I myself am a contractor."

lulz
Seriously. I left it because it's kind of a dopey Op Ed.

I need to find the actual article, it was pretty good.

I was a golf caddy for Nemacolin Country Club when I was a teenager.

Guess what? It didn't come with a 401(k) and medical benefits. You know why? It's not a career. You know what I was? Independent contractor. They did give me a t-shirt, which was nice.

I realize I wasn't clear enough, I meant why wouldn't I use my own "autonomous people hauler".
I believe Uber is working on a model where Uber would owns a fleet of autonomous cars that circulate throughout the city and are available for fares. They are aiming both at the taxi market and at people (mostly city-dwellers) who don't want to own cars themselves, such as folks who mostly use public transportation but also need to take an occasional car trip. Rather than owning a car and paying all of the expenses that go with that, you'd just summon an Uber auto-pod for the trip.
