Yeah the Rock was a great racing track.

North Wilkesboro suffered from being too close to Bristol and Martinsville.

And remember during that era they tried to kill Darlington.
Yup, I'm actually shocked that Darlington is back to two races, including on Mother's Day (where it belongs)

Xfinity race is good, but again stage racing is terrible.

Another year that there is virtually no chance the Daytona 500 is run on Sunday. Tomorrow looks better but still a good chance of storms. My bet is that this gets run in the morning Monday.

Mother Nature seems to always know when there's gonna be a big race at Daytona. She either craps on the 500 or the (insert soda here) 400 in July.

Good news is they're gonna try to run tonight.

Bad news? I doubt it finishes before 1am. Supposedly this is the last of the rain, so I doubt we're gonna see any further weather delays or a short finish.

Cut the stages out and you can finish quicker.

and they are just sawing the **** out of that 8 car.

Officially 16 cars in The Big One 1.0, 6 currently marked as DNF (7 total, if you include Cope's blown tire on lap 3)

Also, crazy that Trevor Bayne's Daytona 500 win was a decade ago already. And Waltrip's, of course, two decades ago. All first time race winners.

Reasons why the Daytona 500 is just another race, it lives on tradition and being the kickoff to weekly racing.

I had not realized that McDowell was almost 360 starts in the Cup series. He was only about 100 races short of where Waltrip was when he won the 500 20 years ago.

I haven't heard Bayne's name in forever. I didn't know that he's been out of racing since 2018 and has opened his own coffee roaster house in Tennessee.

I have an acquaintance who is involved in the dirt scene in East TN and has known Bayne since he was like a toddler and said that his fluke 500 win was the worst thing that happened to his career.

NASCAR shouldn't have thrown the wet caution; nobody took wets so that is evident.

Chase Elliott should not have pitted. Horrible call.

I'll admit I forgot to tape yesterday's race. Got home to find out it was another first-time winner, albeit one who was not a surprise like the week before. (Hard to consider any Gibbs car an underdog)

Not that this should be a shock, but there will be limited fan attendance to the Mother's Day weekend race at Darlington.
As NASCAR returns to the track Too Tough to Tame at Darlington Raceway, the track will host a limited, reduced number of fans throughout the Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR on the new spring race weekend on May 7-9.

The reduced capacity for the 2021 spring event weekend is due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and continues in accordance with enhanced safety protocols and procedures to provide a safe environment for fans, competitors, employees and industry personnel.

“As we launch the new spring dates for the Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR, we look forward to welcoming our loyal fans back to the track Too Tough to Tame to create new lifelong memories,” said Darlington President Kerry Tharp. “Thanks to South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and his administration’s leadership and collaboration to allow us to host fans on our new race weekend. We will continue to work diligently to provide fans another safe, exciting race experience at Darlington Raceway.”

As a result of the seating capacity limitations, many guests have had their grandstand seats relocated to ensure social distancing between groups.

In addition to maintaining a strict adherence to 6’ social distancing throughout the venue, all guests will be screened before entering the facility at staggered entry times and will be required to wear face coverings. Multiple hand-washing and hand-sanitizing stations will be placed throughout the operating areas and entrances and a “clean team” of staff, clearly identified for guests, will be cleaning or disinfecting at all times.

What's fun is that for years this race weekend conflicted with our commencement ceremonies (we're ten minutes from the track), so we altered our semester schedule to push the ceremony to the following weekend. Not enough hotel rooms, and most require multiple night stays that weekend and so on.

So when the race moved to Labor Day only, we were relieved. When they announced the race, we had to change our semester calendar again (right before the start of classes) to adjust and not screw over parents/relatives who want to see their kid graduate.

So weird.

Darlington had been the Mother's Day race for a long, long time.

Captain "I am the worst commissioner in pro sports" France tried to kill all the old tracks. That's why they moved it to Labor Day.

Taking a date from Darlington in the first place was a mistake. It was both, then it was spring only a number of years before being moved to its other traditional date.
