Depends who the crew is. If it's made up of some the delinquents on this board, then no thank you!

I'm slightly claustrophobic, so no.

I've never been in the submarine at the science center. Is it still there or has it rusted away?

I always seemed to end up down there in winter and it was either closed or completely uninviting.

I couldn't live in any submarine, no matter the color. Boomers are easier than fast attacks, but in general submarine life is a miserable as it gets. Only way it gets any worse is when you've all but wrapped up a six month deployment, are less than a day away from home, and get word from command that the boat set to replace you on the mission is experiencing mechanical difficulties and will not be ready on time, so your tour has been extended. Turn around now. We'll send a Seahawk with re-supply.
Early submariners and the sub vets from WWI and II were insane.

I had a chance to go subs as an electronics tech when I first joined the Navy and turned it down. For years I wondered if I made the right decision, since the sub community advances quicker than the normal surface Navy.
Fast forward 10 years where I was assigned to a shipyard in Georgia for reserve duty and actually got a chance to walk around on one. No thanks. JS is very claustrophobic.
I couldn't imagine how anybody taller than six feet survives on a sub without regular use of a hard hat.

The sub vol paperwork that I signed in boot camp was thankfully lost. They really try and sell you on that extra 50 bucks a month or whatever the hell sub pay is now.
When I was in nuke school the XO of NNPTC was the tallest submariner in the Navy at 6'7". No idea how he survived deployments. Had an instructor that trained for a marathon while on deployment by running on a treadmill. The work schedule and magical 18 hour submarine days are bad enough without adding in running on a treadmill like Quasimodo.

I'd take the lifestyle of an XO at 6'7" over any E-3 any day of the week.

The 7-year-old version of me was in the submarine at the Science Center, and even then I thought it was extremely cramped and narrow. So no, I would not want to live in a submarine.

I can understand how they got people to volunteer for new technologies when it was something like aviation. You're flying! You have slipped the surly bonds and whatnot. It's exhilarating, even if in the early days it was monstrously dangerous. There was a payoff. Similarly with airborne infantry; there's a rush to the activity.Early submariners and the sub vets from WWI and II were insane.
What do you get out of living in a windowless steel hotdog for days on end? Even now that it's much less risky than in the World War era, there really is no upside that I see.
"So let me get this straight: The boat will be underwater for the better part of 90 days, I'll be breathing recycled air, in such close quarters with my shipmates that I'll be able to identify them by smell, there will be intense periods of high stress where I have to remain utterly silent, and if anything breaks the vessel will implode."
We'll pay you fifty dollars extra.

Talking to a guy at work that was deployed for two years, he said the mental tests given are so intense and geared toward how long it takes you to snap. To gain private time away from others, they would climb into the missile deployment tubes. He wouldn't answer how long each deployment would consist of, but only that once you are down, you stay down.
