So I just submitted using FreeTaxUSA

I mean, it's a way better user experience than Turbo Tax and doesn't cost anything so what gives?

I use FreeTaxUSA every year. I submitted my Federal return on Feb 2 and had my refund by Feb 17.

efile for free? 1040 with additional forms?

We've got a big $67 refund coming our way this year, so I made the switch to FreeTaxUSA instead of paying twice my return to file with Turbo Tax.

I just assume anything free on the I-net (including 5af) is just using your information to feed a human eating algorithm. Or giving my information to red China. Or both.

my taxes are semi-simple. I have 1 W-2 and I get a 1099 as a "contractor" for scorekeeping hockey games.

In pure Pennsylvania state fashion, I have no idea how to access the link to e-file on their MyPATH website. I can access hundreds of other possible tax scenarios that are extremely unlikely to ever impact anyone, but just a simple "FILE A RETURN" is nowhere to be found. I had to request them send me a letter with a code to even get logged on, and now that I'm logged on, their instructions which say where to go to click File a Return, do not show that option.

If it doesn't, navigate to https://mypath.pa.gov and scroll down to "Returns" and select "File a PA Personal Income Tax Return"

We owe $280 to the feds, which is a good outcome. Not gonna make any changes to my withholding until next year so that I get a full year with the new company and salary.

Almost break even. Fed owed $560. State refund of $180.

A lot better than last year’s debacle owing a combined $10,000.

This seems like the most appropriate thread for this, but has anyone waived their home mortgage escrow and now make the tax/insurance payments themselves? I am going through this process now and wondered if I needed to reach out to my local tax authority to have them send me the tax invoices directly, rather than the mortgage company.

I paid off my mortgage in 2020, and I can say that the mortgage company did not tell the tax authorities to send me the bills. I had to make some phone calls to get the invoices sent directly to me.

confirming what Shyster said. It's better to do it this way if you're disciplined enough to put some money away in a reserve account so you're not hit with a huge bill when the taxpayer comes. Or you're rich and don't care
