I woke up to a text this morning that my friend/colleague's husband passed away last night from a massive heart attack. Dude seemed like a great guy from the couple times I've met him and talking to her... He was older (early 50s), but this is the first time someone I'm close to and in my age group has lost a spouse. She has an 8 year old son at home who slept through everything last night and is completely unaware. If you are the praying type, could you please?

This one is really hitting me on multiple levels. RIP Jeff.
I attended the funeral this morning. It was really beautifully done--a huge part of the family is either police or military so that added another emotional layer to it. The chief of the Monterey, CA police department (where her husband served for 26 years) flew east to speak and attend. When he presented the trifold flag to my friend and her son...no words.

I've never been to an honors funeral, and I frankly don't think I'm emotionally equipped to handle it.

As my father-in-law was a retired Lt. Colonel when he passed away, the Air Force had an honors guard at his funeral. 21 gun salute, folded flag, all very moving.

Is a big event like that helpful or harmful for the grieving process?

I won’t really want anyone saying anything to me if that degree of tragedy strikes. The ceremonial element to that would make things much worse for me.

The 3 grandparents whose funerals I attended all were military so the ceremony adds extra poignancy. So if you're right on that edge of emotion, Taps will push you over and laugh as you hit every rock on the way down.

For my father-in-law, it was only 4-5 airmen from Charleston AFB. Evidently, they have a unit that handles these things. He was a Vietnam veteran (served in Thailand), and was very proud of his service, so it made sense for his funeral. It was poignant, but not over the top or anything.

Most airshows have a Missing Man flyover tribute at the start of the flying day, which is probably the closest I've gotten to an honors service. It's pretty moving seeing some octogenarian come to attention and salute the flag as Taps plays over the PA and the aircraft pass overhead.

We were on our honeymoon in Italy when that Max Mosley story broke. We were actually in Maranello the day after the Bahrain GP in 2008. I remember that because the day after the Bahrain GP was my 35th birthday, and I had my photo taken across the street from the main factory gate on Via Abetone after having lunch at the Restaurante Cavallino, fulfilling what was a bucket list wish of mine. Mrs Tif is awesome.

Very important to chime in and mention that the young person who died should have known better. Thank you for your service.

Is 32 too young to know that riding a bike at 1 AM is dangerous?

Who said anything about deserved ya fatalistic dunce? Stupid games, unfortunately stupid prizes. By all accounts he was a good dude but he didn’t put himself in a great position to continue living.

I would prefer it if all bicyclists feared for their life every time they got on a bike.
