So, way back in 2002 or something, I bought a lifetime subscription to Rolling Stone for like $100. I really enjoyed the magazine back then, obviously, and thought that was a great deal.

In 2018 or so, they went to a monthly print schedule from their bi-weekly status they'd had since the early days of the magazine. Fine.

Earlier this week, I got an email stating that all lifetime subscriptions will be transitioned to digital only starting in June. I figured this would happen at some point, but not for a few years. This isn't a digital subscription with site access to archives and so on, just a digital copy of the print edition each month.

Note I didn't put this in the gear grinding thread. I haven't read the magazine much in years and honestly was looking into canceling the already paid for subscription. It's a combination of the musicians they cover, the shrinking of the magazine, overbearing political coverage, and just general apathy. Plus, I need reading glasses to read the tiny print.

What's troubling is that neither of my teenagers have any interest in reading Rolling Stone. They are fans of many of the newer musicians and cover artists, too. And I started subscribing when I was their age, too. Not great for the future of that magazine.

Having milked cows in my life I can honestly tell you that it's not something that you'd really want to pay to do.

I didn't realize until the last couple years upon rewatch that SNL's own Mikey Day was a main creative force behind these classics.

It is probably one of the first few YouTube videos I ever saw, maybe even the first. I still love it.

I subscribed because of P. J. O'Rourke, and the rest of it was bonus material to me.

The original was from the early 2000s, for sure.
