I just don't get looking for trouble. And by trouble, I mean, looking for a surly, dead man's thoughts from 40 years ago...what purpose does it serve...?
"Yeah, well, Thomas Jefferson owned slaves!!!"
So, I've heard...do you really find it healthy to keep reminding yourself, the downtrodden (or those who act downtrodden on another's behalf), of that unchangeable fact...?
If the claim on the latter is education...ok, in a measured sense, that is acceptable...in the former, it has no visible application...
I don’t think it needs to be broadcast. But it was. These days, I tend to gloss over these things, shake my head and wish for a better tomorrow. John Wayne has an airport named after him. He’s clinging onto the zeitgeist so I’m glad on some levels that I’m aware of his character. I don’t like to be fooled by simple narratives. I.E. the sweet old man’s man. So I’m happy to know the truth, wherever it lies. People on twitter who let this ruin their day. I feel bad they can’t find peace, and wish they could learn to settle down.
I wouldn’t chime in on a disagreement about how long ago it was ok to be like this. It’s not interesting and it doesn’t change minds. I engaged with MIMH because he was showing some sort of plea to leave the poor man alone...or something like that. That’s not a thing. He’s dead. He can’t be hurt. He also was proud to give that interview, so plant/grow n’at. Leave his family alone. Don’t call for banning his movies. But he doesn’t deserve respect simply because he’s not alive at the moment.
He has an airport named after him. A tiny, disagreeable, dangerous airport, that obligates onerous noise abatement departure procedures so as not to bother the tony 1%ers in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach who bought houses there knowing full well there was an international airport at their backs.
I never understood the adoration for John Wayne. He was a guy that wore makeup and played pretend time hardass. It's not like he had fantastic range as an actor either. The true embodiment of all hat and no cattle.

The number of good John Wayne movies can be counted on zero hands.
Only two I've seen: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Searchers are good
The Searchers is, in my mind, an especially good film. In it, Wayne plays a strongly racist character but the film does a good job of questioning if he's a "good person" or not imo
Ethan Edwards, fierce, alone, a defeated soldier with no role in peacetime, is one of the most compelling characters Ford and Wayne ever created (they worked together on 14 films). Did they know how vile Ethan's attitudes were? I would argue that they did, because Wayne was in his personal life notably free of racial prejudice, and because Ford made films with more sympathetic views of Indians.
The Green Berets should alway be required viewing for Mr Sulu's implied torture of a VC spy and the sun setting on the west coast of Vietnam, which does not have a west coast.

Err... looking at a map, that couple hundred or so miles of coastline facing the Gulf of Thailand strikes me as having a distinct westerly air and flavor. Same goes for the opposite-of-east side of the island of Phú Quốc in the Gulf of Thailand.
I'm thinking the movie error must have been that the place where the scene was located was on the east coast, not that Vietnam has no west coast at all.

The Spacey case is going to trial.
There seems to be a fair amount of holes in the accuser's story
Charge dropped. Too bad Spacey can't get those missing text messages. Pretty sure they'd give him a solid case to sue his accusers.
In a one-paragraph filing, Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said Wednesday “the unavailability of the complaining witness” compelled prosecutors to end the case.
Spacey, 59, was accused by the son of former WCVB anchor Heather Unruh of putting his hand down the then-18-year-old’s pants at an upscale bar on Nantucket in July 2016. He faced one count of indecent assault and battery.
The alleged victim pleaded the Fifth Amendment earlier this month, prompting Spacey’s lawyer to call for dismissal. It also comes after a civil suit was dropped by Unruh and her son six days after it was filed.
Honestly, if the claims were indeed false (and I am starting to bet they were), think about the damage they caused. Spacey was enjoying a fabulous run on House of Cards, and these charges basically ended that show, and destroyed his career.
I thought the one that got him tossed from HoC was the claim from the 14 year old stage actor in the late 80s that suddenly had a story to share when #metoo was trending.

The Searchers is a fantastic movie. Wayne is basically playing himself more than he ever did. Great actor, huge arsehole.
