Sidney Crosby makes $8.7 million. In 2022. The Pistons 8th man makes that in like three weeks

Agreed. What's the most expensive equipment for a basketball team? The shoes? The amount of equipment and associated infrastructure (skate sharpeners, nets, Zambonis, etc.) needed by a basketball team is miniscule compared to hockey.

The NHL has a limited geographic footprint historically. It was exclusionary to the majority of the United States and therefore the biggest population centers of North America. Simpleton games like basketball and soccer can be played anywhere and have a developmental advantage...that's not a league being
well run, the NHL doesn't have teams being moved across the country every time they go on an 8 game losing streak...

Unless "well run" consists of a commissioner going on record as saying he wished for Lakers vs Lakers Final(S) and then enforced 500 fouls in big spots to ensure he got at least one Laker team in the Final(S)...if that's "well run", then I'd rather the NHL go back to 12 teams and be completely out of the national spotlight...

Hmm, so expansion/relocation has gone better for the NHL, is that the argument here?

Except for the Coyotes.

Well that's quite a big exception. Can we say Florida worked? What NBA relocation/expansion hasn't worked?

salary arguments are directly correlated to popularity. I guess you could argue that the NBA has maximized its popularity compared to the NHL, which I don’t completely disagree with

does that mean it’s more well run? Idk

Regardless of marketing, a league where the majority of the players are not American will never fully be embraced by most of America.

but that’s a function of the sport, not the league

my shitty ass can hide way better in hockey than basketball

non helmet league, top players average 30+ minutes rather than 20 or so, basketball has less physicality than hockey, etc

It also helps that nearly every kid had their own hoop or a court near them growing up. Basketball is an insanely accessible sport.

For what time frame? I don't know NBA markets well enough or their situations exactly...the NHL has greatly expanded its talent footprint (the leading scorer in the league is from Arizona, youth hockey in the Vegas metro area has exploded, etc.).

The WJC team has players from: FL, CA, CO, KS, OH, AZ (x2), MT plus all of the usual states. In 1991, there was a VA and an OH (Ian Moran who grew up in Mass.) and the other usual suspects.

I doubt we're talking about all-time or even post-WWII. But just in case we are, the NHL was in a booming expansion mode around the same time the NBA contracted nearly in half in a 10-year span...

Right now. I'm not arguing which league was better in 1941
