If you pay them enough, a lawyer will argue anything (no matter how preposterous).

if the bun is connected - its not a sammy

There is no way you object to this being called a sandwich
perhaps there is more philosophical question we should be addressing: is a hoagie a sammie?

sammie : square :: hoagie : rectangle ?

I'm throwing slappy some support on this one because he is crushing the softball efforts being put forward in here.

Hold on now. Hot dogs aren't even close to a sandwich. 2 people who voted as such should disappear.

I don't think there really is a distinct definition of what is and is not a sandwich - there doesn't need to be - even a lay person does not need clear and distinctly defined lines.

A hot dog is not a sandwich. A hamburger is not a sandwich. A pulled pork SANDWICH is a sandwich. A hoagie is a type of a sandwich. A wrap is not a sandwich.

This isn't that hard dudes.

Letter of the law, a hot dog is a sandwich. But it's a sandwich in the same way that Tim Tebow is a quarterback.

That analogy breaks because I don't consider hot dogs a "great" sandwich

The people claiming the burger isn't a sandwich need to study their food history.

I can certainly be convinced of the hamburger's status as a sandwich, it could just be your classic case of a proprietary eponym.

Hot dogs though, **** no.

Sausages on a hoagie roll with peppers and onions. Is that a sandwich? A sausage sandwich?

My understanding is that a cheesesteak is properly called a 'steak sandwich'. But no, as with sausage and peppers, and with anything from Subway, because the bun is connected at the bottom it's not a sandwich.

That's not right at all. Bun connection does not disqualify something as a sandwich. Subs, hoagies, whatever are a subset of sandwiches. An italian hoagie is more of a sandwich than a friggin cheeseburger is.

So a sandwich is only a sandwich if the bread is cut a particular way? Seems weird to me for the way a knife is used to cut bread is what defines something as a sandwich or not a sandwich but whatevs.
