Yeah, it's real difficult because you have to strategize once you get into the Sweet 16. And then when you throw in the tiebreaker of highest total of seeds, it makes you really think in those early round matchups. My strategy is always to go off of my bracket at first and then re-think things once the Sweet 16 is decided. From that point, you have to almost go in a circle around the bracket to make sure you always have someone available. The roadblock I ran into was that I took Kentucky in round 1 and K State against UMBC so I didn't have either of them available on Thursday night, which is good because I would have taken Kentucky. So what I have left is Loyola today, Kansas tomorrow, and then we'll see if there's still a contest. If there is, I'll have no one in the championship game unless FSU picks off Michigan tonite and if they do that, I'm thinking that the contest will already be over.

My opponent has Michigan so it looks like we'll be dueling another day. I'm gonna take Kansas tomorrow. He has Kansas/Nova/T Tech available. If he's smart (and clairvoyant), he matches my pick and then he's guaranteed a win because he's got me beat by 3 in the tiebreaker.

Michigan to the Championship. I just got a chest pain. Especially if it’s Duke, too.

Good for the conference however.

Isn't gambling great? I had the under in the Duke-Cuse game last nite and it lost by...a half point. :face:

As for the games tonite, freakin impressive as hell out of Loyola to continue to fundamentally dismantle their opponent. K State made a run at them and got it down to 11 and then Loyola jars another 3 to kill the momentum and cruised from there. As I said earlier in the thread, if you want to know how to play the game right, watch Loyola play on a loop. In the 2nd game, I expected FSU's depth and length to give Michigan's shooters a ton of trouble and they did but Michigan's defense was outfreakinstanding. Then when FSU climbs back into it in the last 2 minutes, they go brain dead on offense again. Down 3 with 1:15 left and you're chucking 3's? Go to the damn basket!! And then they miss with :11 left down 4 and don't even bother to foul. Leonard Hamilton then looks at Dana Jacobsen like she has 3 heads when she asks him why they didn't foul. I've always thought he was a crappy coach and that reaction there pretty much cemented it for me.

On to Sunday...Go KU!!

The survivor pool dream is over. Both me and my opponent took Kansas and as a result, we'd each only have one team left and his tiebreaker number is better than mine. I will now light something on fire. :(

Same Loyola effed me. I was in the driver's seat and three people picked up the 11 points from them last night so I have no shot

Today's games...

Texas Tech decided to pick today to play their worst game of the year with their full complement of players. A lot of that is because of how well-rounded Villanova's defense is. For T Tech, it's a shame because Nova couldn't hit the water while standing on the dock from the 3-point line. But instead of getting down like most teams might if their outside game was way off, they went elsewhere, hit the boards, played defense, and gutted out the win. They're the most complete team left on the board.

As for game 2, remember those 15-round heavyweight bouts from the 80s (Youtube it, youngsters)? That's what Kansas-Duke was. Back and forth the entire game...terrific basketball to watch. Kansas had the perfect setup against that Duke zone and I was very surprised that K stuck with the zone the entire time. Granted, their man-to-man D (or lack thereof) was the reason why they ended up going zone this season but geez, guys kept missing assignments and Kansas made them pay from the outside. But yet, Duke kept coming back down and beating KU on the glass and getting a couple of clutch shots themselves. Show of hands...who groaned in distress when Allen started his drive with 5 seconds left thinking that no matter what, he was going to make the winning shot? Yeah, me too. The gods said no, thankfully. And then Malik Newman steps up and scores alllllll the KU points in OT. BIll Self returns to the site of his national championship and it sets up a tremendous nightcap to Saturday night's doubleheader.

Michigan opened up as 6 point favorites against Loyola, and the line is already down to 5 or 5 1/2. Everyone likes an underdog :)

Penn state playing really well so far. Not sure I’ll be able to stay up past halftime (fair weather fan 4lyfe) so hopefully they keep it up.

Onto the NIT championship...fun stuff. Lions were draining 3s all night (11-18), and Shep Garner set the all-time Penn State record for career 3s. They were obviously disappointed to miss the tournament, but great to see them making do with what they have.

Nice 24-0 run in the first half.

I suspect Shep Garner's mom is one of the people who makes my life as a volunteer youth sports administrator a living hell.

Any woman that embraces her designation as "Team Mom" is automatically the worst.

She definitely has called other team parents asking if they can’t possibly sell more subs and roni rolls.

What's the NIT?
It's a tourney that only matters to the teams that are in it. It's mocked by fans of teams that make the big show, and strangely enough, mocked by fans of teams that weren't good enough to get into it.

lol, the funny thing is (I know dodint is just trolling) that I have never claimed to say that the NIT is a HUGE DEAL. It's just fun to see a team that has sucked at basketball make *a* postseason, and beat some pretty decent teams en route to said postseason championship. Especially ND...that was fun.

And by the way, when I say it's a tourney that only matters to the teams that are in it, I don't say that sarcastically in any way. That's the way it should be. It's a consolation tournament, period.

Neat!

I actually don't know the requirements for the NIT. I know it's a different NCAAMBB tournament but I don't know if there are requirements like you have to be in a certain tier/division or what. The timing was trollish but there was an underlying genuine curiosity there.

Nope... it used to be THE tournament, then the NCAA stepped in, and the NIT said, "F*ck it... we'll take the leftovers." So it's just a consolation tournament.

In theory, it should represent the first 32 teams that were not selected for the tournament. You always end up with some teams in there that could have theoretically made some noise in the tournament, and of course, all of the teams that are listed as the biggest tourney snubs end up in there.

the best 32* outside of the tournament is a sorta-kinda thing

conference regular season champs that don't win their conference tournament get an automatic bid, so there are some smaller school who got upset in their tourney who get in that aren't really top 100 teams. It's fun to follow if your team ends up in it and makes a little run, I can't argue with that.
