COVID-19

Postby faftorial » Wed Mar 25, 2020 9:26 pm

It's a trip going into any tourist destination and encountering a bus chock full of Chinese "tourists". I remember being in Niagara Falls a few years ago...I was taking a picture of my daughter up at the top of the CN Tower and this Chinese woman just flat out shoved me out of the way like I wasn't even there. There is no concept of "personal space" there. I'm sure the fact that China is an authoritarian regime has helped the crackdown on COVID-19 but that is not a culture that is very good at distancing.

I don't know if stores are restocking and selling out early in the AM, but it's the end of the second week since I've seen TP on shelves.
Giant Eagle in Shaler had it this afternoon. Come on down.
He lives in California. Single use paper products are already frowned upon...
Huh.

He's never mentioned it.

Los Angeles residents will be confined to their homes until May at the earliest, Mayor Eric Garcetti told Insider on Wednesday.

"I think this is at least two months," he said. "And be prepared for longer."

In an interview with Insider, Garcetti pushed back against "premature optimism" in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying leaders who suggest we are on the verge of business as usual are putting lives at risk.

"I can't say that strongly enough," the mayor said. Optimism, he said, has to be grounded in data. And right now the data is not good.

So all they have to do is make it through April?

Fauci warned today that this looks to be a seasonal bug as it's starting to spread in the southern hemisphere as they are approaching fall.

I've been wiping down EVERYTHING before bringing inside. Most items that I can remove from the container I do and toss the container in the outside trash can.

So........ I haven't said anything here, but I've been symptomatic for 4 days now. I've gotten to the point where I haven't worsened for 2 days (and, frankly, I feel a bit better today, on balance), so that's good. But my extreme worry is for Mrs Tif; she has scleroderma, and as such has a compromised immune system, and reduced lung function. If I'm 100 hours in and not getting any worse, I'm probably going to be fine. But she is potentially 2 weeks away from showing symptoms yet.

Obviously, I'm flying blind here without the ability to test. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that last few days have been a bit........... weird.

COVID-19

Kids are starting to get diagnosed with COVID-19. So it is affecting everyone. Most cases are mild, but still scary if you have a child.

Previous narrative was this doesn't affect the young.

That is simply false information.

The narrative was that the young were not affected in the same way as the elderly in that the young are able to develop an immune response, often before even showing real symptoms.

It's a virus that affects humans. No human is immune to contracting the virus, people just need to develop an immune response to it affecting them. You have thousands, millions, of virus in you right now. You have simply developed a response to them so they do not affect you (make you sick). They are still in you, they are still there. You are basically just an asymptomatic carrier at that point.

You do not cure someone of a virus. You wait it out. You treat the symptoms to make the person feel better. That's why when you already have the flu the doctor basically just tells you to drink water and take meds for the symptoms; Tylonol for the aches, decongestant for the mucus, etc. You don't take anything to actually fight the virus.

For actual information...

Number of deaths in children (through March 14):
COVID-19: 0
Influenza: 149
