I hate Fox News. Went to a Father’s Day lunch with my FIL, brother, and family. For some reason my FIL decided it was a good time to go on a rant about Juneteenth with “Why do they get a day and we don’t.” And “Well I didn’t own any of them.” He only shut up when I told him he was sounding super racist in a public place. Before Trump he never would have said something like that and never watched Fox News but a steady diet of that garbage has changed the thoughtful and empathetic man he once was into someone that doesn’t even realize he’s being racist. It’s just very sad.

You should probably point out that he wasn’t alive on July 4, 1776 but he observes that. Or that his family wasn’t owned and that’s why he doesn’t get a day. I would recommend Thanksgiving Day for this conversation.

As Texas swelters, local rules requiring water breaks for construction workers will soon be nullified

The law’s scope is broad but ordinances that establish minimum breaks in the workplace are one of the explicit targets. The law will nullify ordinances enacted by Austin in 2010 and Dallas in 2015 that established 10-minute breaks every four hours so that construction workers can drink water and protect themselves from the sun. It also prevents other cities from passing such rules in the future. San Antonio has been considering a similar ordinance.

SECTION 10. Chapter1, Labor Code, is amended by adding Section1.005 to read as follows:

Sec.A1.005. PREEMPTION.
(a)Unless expressly authorized by another statute, a municipality or county may not adopt, enforce, or maintain an ordinance, order, or rule regulating conduct in a field of regulation that is occupied by a provision of this code. An ordinance, order, or rule that violates this section is void, unenforceable, and inconsistent with this code.

(b)For purposes of Subsection(a), a field occupied by a provision of this code includes employment leave, hiring practices, breaks, employment benefits, scheduling practices, and any other terms of employment that exceed or conflict with federal or state law for employers other than a municipality or county.

So not just water breaks, all breaks that are longer and/or more frequent than what's mandated at the state level will be nullified.

Even better, I'd pull up the deposition where they said, under oath, that no reasonable person would take what they say seriously, and therefore they weren't liable for the charges against them.

Yes, I read the article. And I note that the article provides no source for the assertion that water breaks were an explicit target. Certainly, water breaks are not mentioned anywhere in the text of the bill. Rather, as tifosi correctly notes, the bill (now law) provides that state law preempts the field in multiple areas, including all legislation under the Texas Agriculture Code, Finance Code, Insurance Code, Labor Code, Natural Resources Code, Occupations Code, and Property Code. Cities can no longer pass local laws that would fall under any of those subjects.

A common and utterly bulls**t tactic employed both sides of the political aisle is to find some incidental negative effect of a proposed law and act as if that negative effect were the whole purpose of the law. Bonus points if "OMG! People will die!" can be worked in somehow. This article seems to be a perfect example of that sort of trash. For example, let's say the bill were doing the opposite; it removes statewide preemption in a state that had statewide preemption. I'm sure Fox News would report such as bill as " New Law Permits Local Socialists/Communists" to Run Your Life and Do Whatever They Want!!!" That would be equally as bulls**t as this article.

Obviously, I don't like the guy...but imagine being so far up your own ass about politics that you're out there sockin' mannequins that resemble someone you don't agree with...take your fist and jam it up your own dickhole you losers...
