People don't deal with rejection well...giving or receiving...their brains tend to scramble.

don't apologize for doing something you would like doing over something you wouldn't like doing. unless you agreed to the latter and are backing out

I think that's the point. they agreed and then changed their plans. I agree that that's annoying as ****

Kinda trivial, but the our neighborhood group planned to have a bbq tomorrow. Today, one can’t go because of a baseball game, and another family (daughter’s best friend) isn’t showing up until 4pm because they want to watch the Eagles game. I’m missing one of the few Steelers games that is actually broadcasted because everyone else said the time worked for them. Flakes.
People who actually state that they are missing/being late for an event due to a regular season NFL game need to be permanently disinvited from everything.

Come up with some excuse that's not insulting.
I completely disagree with this. How is lying preferable?
Anything is preferable to hey I like you guys but I gotta go watch my team that’s gonna go 6-10 this year lose another game on TV.
"Thank you SO much for the invite! Unfortunately we have family in from out of town and the dog is sick and I got the plumber coming out to take a look at the toilet and I'll need to feed the cat." I've stopped making up excuses. "Hey sounds fun. I'm in but I can't make it til 4." And if they ask why (they won't), I'll tell them. Or sometimes I'll just politely decline. Nobody asks why.

Someone insinuated that rejecting any invite for football was frowned upon

I’d wait till he started complaining about flying on a Boeing then suddenly remember the Eagles game is on.

The odd thing is these people don’t even like football!

Some people are degenerate cancellers. Always an excuse for not showing up. Personal example is my step mom. My dad will come up to visit every 1-2 months. He always says that his wife will be coming along. And every time he comes, she's not there.

She came down with a cold and didn't want to get the kids sick.
She forgot she had something else going on.
She had to watch her grandkids at the last second.

Dad, just tell me she isn't coming. I really don't care.

I've tried to make a point to remove flakey people from my life. Maybe it's an overreaction but to me it's indicative that they don't really care about my time or being honest; and if that's the case, why would I want to spend time with them?

I'm with you on that ween. They're obviously sending a message that they don't really care. I'll reciprocate. Obv I'm not going to cut off my dad, but I need to tell him he doesn't need to tell me his wife is coming. I know she doesn't want to come, let's not beat around the bush

I'm sort of the hype man/leader for a couple of friend groups, and I have a mantra of "don't look for a reason not to do something", so I can get folks who are the fence to come to my side more often than not...thus, a bunch of us are seeing Griz on Thursday and Glass Animals on Tuesday haha

I googled them and now think you’re just trolling. And if so, A+ job.

I’m the kind of person who will organize/plan events and stuff but I’m really bad at “selling” them. I’ve never considered myself a good salesperson and I suck at persuasion

here’s a good example: in January of this year I had an idea to go to Vegas with a bunch of work friends for about this time. I texted about 11 guys to be like “hey in September wanna go to Vegas” and every single one of them said “yeah I’m in”

Over the course of the next 8 months, every one backed out for one reason or another and the trip got canned. Now I’m annoyed that they would initially say yes and not really attempt to follow through but I know that if I was better at encouraging and maintaining their interest in the trip over the course of the year, they would’ve been less likely to flake. But I’m bad at that stuff
