Tannehill had his best two years under Smith, too. I wanted a more up and coming splash hire, but this might be not as bad as I thought.

I know the cool thing is to label things as best ever or straight trash now, but this is somewhere in the middle imo

Well, yeah.

It's a disappointment for me because I was hoping for a younger, fresher mindset in that key role. And we got the warmed-over underachiever that we expected; yippee.

Pittsburgh reportedly hiring Arthur Smith. Predictable of the predictable.
Haven't we suffered enough?

This is the best thing that could've happened for Pittsburgh sports radio.

let's face it, yinzers will yinz regardless. If they hired one of the other names, they'd be all over Tomlin for saying they're hiring a guy with experience calling plays at the NFL level and then hiring a QB coach

I don't like the hire, but will be along for the ride. I understand why it was made, and hope for the best, but if they miss the playoffs again and the offense underperforms. Whooo boy.

Atlanta is a garbage franchise. Not going to hold it against the guy for not achieving success there.

I’ll trust a vrabel guy
Clear track record of success as an oc with a bad qb
This team needed an established guy, not another dork off the shanahan tree

I have a lukewarm take on the Shanahan/McVay tree hires --

They've been the fad for almost 5 years now, so many have been hired away.. not every guy they hire on those staffs turn to gold, their staffs now may very well just not be that great after getting pilfered time and time again

I just don't think Tomlin believes in any of that stuff which points to never even considering them. Which also probably points to why he has no real tree - because he's not a guy labeled as an innovator.

It's impossible for him to be worse than Canada...so that is something I guess.

The primary guys are having tremendous success. No reason to just assume the underlings of the underlings are “up and comers”.

Smith is like the Haley hire. Hopefully he’s not a pos like Haley, but they needed an established guy to clean up the Canada mess.

I don't like, I don't dislike. It's just that "get the offense in order" isn't exactly the thing that jumps to mind when you say "Ryan Tannyhill's best OC".

Meh.
I guess there were/are worse out there.
I do think this kinda confirms 2 things.
1) Steelers view Kenny as a game manager type of QB without a 'star' ceiling that could be developed.
2) They are not interested in drafting a QB anytime soon that would have that type of ceiling.

I would say it shows he was able to maximize a relatively mid QB.

Ron cook hates the hire.

Finally some absolute clarity that this was the right move.

Based on Rooney's statements earlier this week, it seems the opinion inside the building is that they think/expect Kenny is capable of making a similar jump as he did at Pitt. So I would disagree that they view him as limited in terms of upside.

Kenny made that leap after like 5 years...might as well trade TJ/Minkah because they're long gone if that path follows suit.

All Kenny needs is a Jordan Addison type (and by that I mean the best WR in the country) and a Izzy Abanikanda type (first team all American the year after Kenny left)

This

He also needs a competent slot receiver. That goes for any QB here

Overall the 2023 feee agent signings weren’t bad

But Allen Robinson was definitely a swing and a miss
