Based on everything I've read today, he's a replacement for Bennacer, not Tonali. Tijjani Reijnders is the target to replace Tonali.Source of the post If he's your Tonali replacement then you should cry and then cry again.

I didn’t realize that the Gold Cup is being played right now but I was confused why the US played Mexico before the tournament. Apparently it’s part of a new annual competition, the “Continental Clásico” where the US will play a “top tier opponent from North (lol), Central or South America”
I find it funny that the US soccer names it “Clasico”. Strong “Real Salt Lake” energy. One thing I can’t stand about the MLS and it’s fans is how they try to be more European soccer and not American sports

That was in April. The US and Mexico most recently played in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League.

Another tournament. Ended up so close to the Gold Cup due to COVID scheduling shenanigans. They'll never roll anything back due to $$$$ but at the end of the day how many times can the same international teams play each other while pretending it's a different tournament. Federations like CONCACAF and CONMEBOL are way too top heavy for all of these tournaments to mean anything. UEFA has the benefit of a million countries and AFC teams are pretty evenly matched. The FIFA documentary on Netflix did a great job delving into the structure of CONCACAF and how the one country, one vote structure has created a federation controlled by the 31 meaningless Caribbean countries that band together and vote in their best interest. Continually getting their asses kicked on US soil is a huge revenue generator for them.

So apparently, Pulisic has agreed to terms with Milan. Sounds like Chelsea will allow the deal to go through.

They've also agreed to terms with Musah. Trying to be Italian Leeds.

Heard that, too. Is Musah any good? Gattuso compared him to Kessie, which would be fine with me.

Is there a reason why Pulisic, Dest, Adams, McKinnie and co aren’t playing in this?

COVID caused the Nations League to end like a day before the Gold Cup started. Commonplace to let the big guns be available for preseason for their club teams. Is there a reason why Pulisic, Dest, Adams, McKinnie and co aren’t playing in this?

1. This game is crazy. US scores with a few minutes left, Canada gets a PK to tie it in stoppage time. Canada scores in extra time, US tied it late to send it to PKs
2. not that I really care about the result but the PK rule for any foul or handball in the box has always annoyed me and continues to. With the size of the box, how easy it is to score a goal on a PK and with how low scoring games typically are in soccer, it’s one of the worst rules in all of sports imo

of course, I say how easy it is to score a PK and then the first three PKs in the shootout are stopped or missed…

The only issue I have with it is the foul baiting that forwards will do in the box. But otherwise, ehhhh...the rule is hammered so into you that you have to defend differently in the box has always left me feeling its probably pretty okay as a rule. Theres been very few times where I thought a call was atrocious to award a PK. Ref discretion usually evens it out.

2 things:
1. Phenomenal ad
2. About halfway through the highlights I started thinking “I don’t remember these goals…”
