Jose Flores, a horse racing jockey, died today after injuries sustained in a spill in a race on Monday at Parx in Philly.

I grew up very close to Penn National near Harrisburg and my friend's father was a jockey agent and one of the guys he represented was Flores so as a result, I got to meet and drink with Jose a couple of times. Those times were during the height of his career -- led Penn National in wins 4 times in 6 years and was 2nd and 3rd in those other 2 years. He had 4,650 wins and at age 57, he was trying to get to the 5,000 wins plateau. Incredibly hard worker even at his advanced age and built an amazing career. His mounts earned $64.2 million.

Very sad. Those guys, from everything I hear, are some of the hardest workers in the world.

Wayne Huizenga, former owner of all the Miami teams, heads to the big Waste Management dumpster in the sky.

I lived very briefly in Fort Lauderdale when I was around 13, and I recall hearing his name as a prominent businessman in the news. When Huizenga first came to pro sports as an owner, I was like "The garbage guy?" Equal parts unfair and totally accurate. RIP

I went to the Panthers v Vegas game in Sunrise this season. Prior to the game, they honored Huizenga as the original owner and had a little ceremony. He stayed up in the press box and his kid accepted the award. He did not look good then.

Wayne Huizenga is the only person to found three Fortune 500 companies. Not bad.

I was a big Zell fan during the 2004 election cycle...I know that's shocking to most here  He was a cantankerous dude.

My grandmother passed away this afternoon. I’m not posting for sympathy or condolences, though those are certainly appreciated. I’m posting because we lost a huge Pens fan today. She started following the team when my dad and I got season tickets around 2000. She would tape all the games just in case we were on TV and she fell in love with the Pens. I’m going to miss her calling me to ask when they play next and what channel it’ll be on. And I’ll especially miss her ranting to me about how much she hates “that Ovechkin idiot.”

Hill Street Blues, LA Law, NYPD Blue

The guy owned the 80s and early 90s TV landscape for adults.

You left out Doogie Howser! Bochco graduated from CMU when it was still just an Institute of Technology. No idea that he had leukemia.
