From what they were saying this morning on the radio the Bell franchise tag leaves little room for the Steelers to extend both Tuitt and Villanueva. Though if they did offer that reported long term deal they would have been in the same situation anyways.

That seems off, they have $15M in cap space right now, and that's taking into account Bell's 12M.

They can tag Bell again next year right? Two more years of him then he will be on the decline.. Hate to say it like that but it is what it is, get what you can out of him and dump him

He'll hold out, he's already going to be a distraction this year. Best case scenario is he reports to the team just before week 1.

Doesn't make sense to me either. That's what I get for listening to Tim Benz.

My thoughts as well.

Martin Wasserbauer, D-line starter for the Steelers (that is, Ostrava Steelers that will face Prague Black Panthers in Czech Bowl XXIV on Monday). Guess his age.
Forty-freakin-nine. Will turn 50 this year. Won the Czech Bowl 20 years ago. No intention to retire after this season. :)

Basically a bit of a premium over a hypothetical world where he gets franchise tagged for three years instead of the allowed 2. Figure next year's RB tag goes up a bit since his 12.1mm increases the average, so let's say 13mm next year. That's 25mm, and give him 14 for a third year in a hypo world and you get close to 40. They offered 42/3 years, which based on his tweet, it probably had 4th and 5th years that neither side expected to played. Weird bet by Bell IMO. How much more can he really get at market after next year and two more years of touching the ball 300-350 times on what has been a career with a decent amount of injuries. He'll be 27 entering his seventh season of heavy use. Pretty big gamble.

ETA -- its a 20% increase for the second franchise tag. So that comes out to 26.6mm for two years. Another 20% increase gets you to $43mm or so, so essentially the Steelers offered the security of three years worth of franchise tags. So a little bit more in favor of risking it.

My understanding of multiple franchise tagging comes from the Kirk Cousins ordeal. But the tag values go up a lot each year, and it can go to three.

Cousins got $24m on his 2nd tag and will make $32m on a third.

Yea -- I edited my post while you made yours, its a 20% increase for the second. QBs are different so I dont know the specifics. Only QBs can be tagged more than twice IIRC.

Would a sane person choose to know all of the NFL's salary cap rules?

Trade Bell
This is a bad take IMO even with what I'm about to post:

That's now this works Lev. That's not how any of this works.

Steelers offered 42mm/3. I'll enjoy watching him while he's here.

More shocking is that there are still people in this world who are buying Tom Brady jerseys.

I do think Bell has an extraordinary case if he's considering himself a WR too. I think with Bryant back, the Steelers purposely reduce his WR load because of his asks.

You don't think he has a case for being second on the team in receptions? Or that they'll limit him?

Also what WR2 averages 8 yds/reception? The answer is none do.

That's not to diminish his value in that role, but saying he's the equivalent of a WR2 is a stretch, particularly with Bryant coming back.

lol im having trouble understanding lev bells logic with getting paid like a RB1 + WR2 since you still need 11 players

Bell's line of logic is almost like the stillers arguing "well, you only play about three quarters of a season and have meaningfully contributed in 2 of a potential six playoffs games during your career, so we are going to offer you a contract that considers you a part time player"
