Kuhl, Moroff. I took the statement as referring to the big prospects. Cutch, Cole, Polanco, Marte, Pedro, Taillon, Glasnow.. Cutch and Marte are really the only ones that lived up to their billing. Taillon is on his way. Cole has been good but not number 1 pick, ace good. Just feels like year after year we have all these top 100 prospects and who has really turned out of the bunch? The Harold Ramirez, McGuire, Hansons of the world.

I didn't include Moroff on that list because he's mostly an injury callup right now.

Kuhl is coming around and changing his profile. And he's been a serviceable starter since May 31. 7 GS, 38 IP 3.55 ERA

Hard to say that cole hasn't lived up to promise of a #1 overall pick. Appel, Cole, Stasburg, Price, Bullington, Matt Anderson, Kris Benson, Paul Wilson and Ben McDonald and Andy Benes were the pitchers drafted #1 overall since 1988. Cole as 10.8 career WAR, behind Strasburg, price, benes, and McDonald. of course, benes pitched four times as many games and McDonald twice as many. he never had a breakout season but he hasn't been a disappointment. Strasburg was a generational talent in the draft and price was close to it. Plus, price's career ERA and whip aren't head and shoulders above cole.

tldr cole isn't super great but he is good enough.

And two, they've been too unwilling to trade top prospects to add to the ML roster.

If you want to point to the differences between the pens and the pirates, look no further. It is true that the pens have the EXTRAORDINARY benefit of having two of the best players in the world (plus letang) all at team friendly, long term contracts. but the pens have been more than willing to depart ways with touted prospects to fill gaps. how many of those pens prospects amounted to anything? almost none. the pirates have traded some 3rd or 4th best options...grossman, Broxton, jacoby jones (white guy), dilson Herrera, and so forth, and they have not amounted to much as players. that being said, the pirates haven't parted ways with their top end prospects, and they haven't won anything, and those top prospects haven't done enough. its hard to see a future where polanco is a legit middle of the order guy. its hard to see kingham being a middle of the rotation guy. its hard to see alan Hansen...wait nevermind he was dfa'd. its hard to see glasnow pitching deep into games.

maybe if they trade those guys, then win a series. maybe they don't but the safe route (hanging on to these guys) has not panned out, and now the pirates are stuck in another rebuild. harrumph.

What a bizarre game so far... Sloppy, and then that Polanco extra base when Russell fell asleep.

I think 538 had an article about how bad the first game of a series is for the visiting team. It's an early game with a time change...so that explains half of it.
