Rosie passed away this morning, at home and on her own terms. She was a great dog and got a raw deal health wise. I'll miss her a ton.

So sorry man. Take time to grieve. It's necessary.

Sorry to hear Ronnie, it's such a heartbreak when they go so young.

RIP Rosie. That really sucks Ronnie, but it sounds like any sort of positive quality of life just wasn't available any more. You made the right decision.

Hershey caught mice four and five yesterday. Mouse four was DOA, and while mouse five was still alive when I got it away from him and then later released it, I'm betting it didn't survive the night. I'm nicknaming that cat the Black Death.

Why do you have so many mice?

I imagine they are probably smelling the cat food and bird-food peanut/suet cakes that I have in storage bins in the basement. Alas for the mice, those bins are sealed (but not entirely air tight to block smells), and the only cat food is what is out in the dispensers, and when the mice come in and try to get at any of it, they run into the Black Death.

I can't think of anything else. All of my food is in closed pantries with no gaps, and there's nothing else around that they would be after. All of the other bird food/seed is kept outside in steel garbage cans where I thread chains though the side handles and then through the lid handle so that the lids are held down and raccoons and possums can't flip the lids off. (Protip: Raccoons and possums will try to chew open plastic birdseed bins. It takes something made of metal to keep them out.)

Chiefs players have been getting a lot of bad press and with good reason. Kareem Hunt, Tyreek Hill, Rashee Rice, Harrison Butker. I've probably missed a boatload of others.

But then there's this:

Inside K.C. Chiefs' Derrick Nnadi's quest to save shelter dogs
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/401 ... elter-dogs

To be sure, it's not a whopper of a revelation that stories of the good that people do doesn't get the press of the nastiness and irresponsibilities. I know a lot of NFL players do good work charity-wise.

What gets me about this story is 1) it's in my wheelhouse of dog rescue and 2) the guy is a fringe NFL player nonetheless doing what he can. The guy is not a superstar and every year the story is "Well, maybe we can get someone to replace Nnadi. No? OK, I guess we'll go with Nnadi." He lives on the edge of losing his job every year.

"I guess it's just a dog's world and I'm in it."

That's awesome. He's helped save over 500 dogs. Such a shame stories like that don't go viral.

This morning we took in a new dog. A 2-year-old, 17.6 pound brindle male Boston terrier/pug mix. Noisy and not quite house-broken.

His name as he came to us was Dada (pronounced -- inexplicably -- "Day-Day").

While new in our living room, he was understandably excited. Tough to come in to a situation like ours and not be. Lots of new dogs and smells. He was not responsive to "Day-Day." I wouldn't be either. I happened to have on my lap our dog Odin, who was also excited. I shouted "Odin!" and the new dog responded immediately. Thus our new dog got his new name:

Dodint.

Hahahaha.

Noisy and not quite house-broken.

I should add that the name Dodint may not stick. My wife doesn't read this board and so it's completely random to her.

Anyway, we'll get Dodint neutered in a few weeks and find Dodint a good home. Wherein, I'm sure, they'll rename him something boring. Always happens.

Oh, just one more thing: it is definitely "doe-dint" since it has "Odin" in the middle.

Genuinely honored over here, can't think of anyone else I would be happy to lend my moniker to.

I made a few cheap jokes, but I'm glad you took it as a sign of respect, which was my intention.

We'll try to get a few pics in the next few days and I'll post a link.

Awesome. :thumb:

Talked to my vet today and Ava's last day is next Saturday. She's gotten to the point where I have to pick her up to get her from room to room. Just not much quality of life happening.

She did have a good time being carted around at Chapman State Park over the weekend. Lots of petting from strangers as we explored the park.

It's fine. We expected to get 12-18 months for her and she made it 30. Surprised the hell out of us. She's 17 this fall. Time to go.

I feel like I have discussed this inevitably so often here as we worked through her various ailments. It'll be sad but she's going out on a high note. :)
