With Evgeni Malkin surpassing Rick Kehoe and becoming the 4th leading scorer in Penguins franchise history this past season, it got me to thinking- are we, as Pens fans, as spoiled by the Top 4 (Lemieux/Jagr/Crosby/Malkin) as we seem to be. So I compared the 4 to the Top 4 franchise scorers of the other 29 teams. The rankings are 1-30 based on Points Per Game by the Top 4. In parenthesis is games played with the franchise, asterisks note still active with the franchise.
1. Pittsburgh Lemieux 1723 (915)...Jagr 1079 (806)...*Crosby 853 (627)...*Malkin 702 (587) 1.48 PPG

30. Nashville Legwand 566 (956)...Erat 481 (723)...*Weber 392 (685)...Timonen 301 (573) 0.59 PPG
Notes- Detroit has the highest scoring Top 4 amongst the league. To reach the sheer volume of points by their 4, Crosby & Malkin need 1,631 points the rest of the way to surpass.

Nicklas Backstrom enters Washington's Top 4 this season, barring a trade, major injury, or a distinct drop in talent.

How sad do you have to be as a Jets/Thrashers fan that Little and Enstrom round out your Top 4?

How depressed would a Panthers fan be to see Olli Jokinen is their franchises' leading scorer?

It interests me to see that after the Penguins, the 2 teams right behind are the ones Wayne Gretzky spent the bulk of his career with. Certainly not a shock.

Anyone else surprised to see Bobby Orr isn't in Boston's?

This is of course nothing concrete. Not a declaration that 66/68/87/71 are the greatest offensive force in the history of hockey. However, I think it does prove the point that we are pretty spoiled by their offensive talents. Definitely not by the volume of Stanley Cup banners in correlation with their skill.

I wouldn't necessarily say spoiled. I would say darn lucky to have this kind of talent roll through the city. We've seen the second best (arguably to some) hockey player of all time play here. Two of the best of their generation play here. We'll see what happens at the end of the Crosby/Malkin era in Pittsburgh. I fear it may go the way of the late 90's early 2000's Penguins, but we'll see. So spoiled? nah... Lucky? You're damn right.

I don't think it's wrong to be frustrated by squandered opportunities. I also don't that = spoiled.

Good and interesting analysis. I wouldn't say that we're spoiled as a result of this, but we have been a highly star-dependent team through much of our history...

I don't think having star players is a sign of being spoiled, I go by championships. 3 Cups in 50 years isn't amazing. That's probably just above average in terms of Cups/10 years rate.

Steelers fans, on the other hand, are incredibly spoiled (and 99% of my interaction with Steelers fans is on here) and for the most part haven't been a terribly star-studded team historically (at least on offense). Of course, that's changed recently.

i would have had a lot more fun rooting for tampa and a bunch of other teams this year. seeing guys win scoring titles in the regular season and then shrink in the playoffs doesn't really do it for me anymore. it was more appealing before the league went in the toilet again, and guys like sid and geno could make you say "holy s***!" a bunch of times every year.

I guess being spoiled by these players is a relative term. Would a fan of the Habs, Isles, Oilers, Hawks think so? Probably not. But fans of the teams at the bottom of the list- Nashville, CBJ, Florida- who have no Cups to go with their abysmal offenses would likely relish having any of those 4 guys in their primes. Thus, would label pens fans spoiled.

Clearly, most people don't seem to agree to the notion these guys have "spoiled" us. But as paying customers of this team, you've had a chance to see something breath-taking from 1984-present (sans 03/04) by going to watch the guys in black/gold. It's tough to say I would wanna trade that in.

I would rather be spoiled than egotistical jack-holes like many teams have (Philly, Boston, any Canadian team, etc)

egotistical jack-holes
Interestingly, this is a term most other fans associate with Mario, Jags, Sid, & Geno

I was referring to the fans. "I would rather be spoiled (fans) than egotistical jack-hole (fans) like many teams have ..."

90% of the players in all professional sports are spoiled egotistical jack-holes (and that does include hockey) so that part is moot.

Wat

The steelers have the third most hall of famers iirc. Their not recent offensive hall of famers include Bradshaw, Harris, swann, stallworth, webster, and dermontti Dawson. Bettis just got in. Obv the franchise is known for its defense but there's plenty of hall of famers on the other side.

/s/ spoiled steelers lunatic who will argue with you about the steelers for a vaguely incorrect statement in an internet hread that has nothing to do with the steelers

Whether if or not Pens fans are spoiled I can't say for certain, but it's been my experience that they (we) are not.

The organization itself certainly does not have a sense of entitlement. I base that on reading and watching hundreds of interviews and broadcasts where guys like Steigerwald, MacMilian and Bob Grove, all Pens lifers, always say how "blessed" and "lucky" the Pens are for having superstars on the team since 1984.
