I can admit that tanev at his cap hit and role and production is a luxury on a team that doesn't have much room for luxuries

He is/was certainly a bit of a luxury. As is a 3rd pairing guy making 4+ million. It creates problems elsewhere. Especially when you suck at drafting useful bodies.

I think you might be able to call Tanev a 3rd liner at this point...not a great one, but look at the production...
He's played at a 29 point ES pace as a Penguin (100 games)...that's around 150th among forwards in the NHL (using 2018-19 stats, that's the last full season)...that's not nothing.
Massive for the total of the contract, I think that's in the "acceptable" range for me in terms of the feeling on it...but maybe not so much on a per-year basis though...

I'm incredibly excited, because there's a good bit of money available that they haven't had before. Same with LTIR and Malkin. They may be able to stretch a bit and dump Peterrsson(sp) or Zucker.

Why lose McCann for nothing if you know you can get assets back? Why doesn't what you say about Tanev apply to him?
Man, you guys really overvalue a 4th liner making $3.5m
Just because a coach with horrible player usage plays him on the 4th line, it doesn't make him a 4th liner. Just like Rodrigues isn't a 1st liner even though Sullivan played him there.

Seriously. It's like they're getting guys who are just going to chase hits all night and hope Jordan Eberle scores enough to keep them in games.

I didn't want to lose Tanev. His cap hit was ok for the upcoming two seasons. After that, I am not sure how competitive we are.

In 2 seasons sid geno and letang will be 100 years old, Rust will be priced out as a UFA and Jake will be flipped for the full blown rebuild. The team will likely not be a top tier competitive team as the window slams fully shut

Can’t wait until we trade Hallander to Seattle for McCann and find out this was all a plot to get another 7th round pick.
