Seattle Expansion Draft
One key people need to remember, the Pens will lose a "good" player in the ED. It is set up so that Seattle can get someone that doesn't stink from each team. They will loose someone that contributes.
Exempt (not full, just "names"): Poulin, Legare, Zohorna*, Marino, Joseph
Current protect for me (cap order):
G: Jarry
D: Letang*, Dumoulin, Pettersson
F: Malkin*, Crosby*, Guentzel, Zucker, Rust, Kapanen, McCann
Expose (not full list, just "names" and those that qualify for the exposure need):
G: DeSmith
D: Matheson, Ruhwedel, Riikola, Friedman
F: Tanev, Carter, Lafferty, (qualified/resigned RFAs: Blueger, Reese)
Plus any UFAs that resigned before the draft
I am protecting Pettersson over Matheson because Pettersson has more trade value than Matheson but mostly due to the contracts. Matheson is $850K more, and has an additional year.
I am protecting Zucker because he is no lower than the #6 value F (protection wise). #7 on my list is McCann, but Tanev has a chance of pushing out McCann, 7a and 7b. Blueger isn't really in the running, he is #9 at best, as you could argue Carter over Blueger.

McCann is 4 years younger too so he still has room for improvement in his game

Great pointHaving an extra protection slot on D is a huge positive. It gives us a chance to make a trade on the discount...

They will have much better picks then SJ/Tampa/Ottawa had 30 years ago:
I don't remember this:
so it's not surprising that Vegas did a lot better than those three teams.21 of the 22 franchises in the league at the time of the draft were allowed to protect two goaltenders and fourteen position players (the San Jose Sharks were the only team exempt of protection restrictions as they were an expansion team the previous season). Beyond that, every team had to make available at least one goaltender who had played at least one NHL game.
I don't remember this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_NHL_Expansion_Draft...every team had to make available at least one goaltender who had played at least one NHL game. This clause (known to the league teams far in advance) led to several trades so that teams could fulfill the requirement without exposing their lead goaltenders. It also led to anomalies such as Ray LeBlanc (the star of the 1992 United States Olympic team) being put into the only NHL game of his career so that the Chicago Blackhawks could expose him and not Ed Belfour, Dominik Hasek or Jimmy Waite. To avoid exposing any of their three goaltenders, the Washington Capitals re-signed former goalie Bernie Wolfe, who was aged 40 and last played an NHL game in 1979. League president John Ziegler held up approval of the contract and summoned Capitals general manager David Poile to Toronto to explain himself; not willing to risk being sanctioned, the team signed Steve Weeks instead.

That's a pretty neat little anecdote, that Ray LeBlanc thing.
I seem to remember a similar goalie rule for the wild/cbj expansion

And here it is:
For teams protecting only one goaltender, there was no experience requirement for those left unprotected. For teams protecting two goaltenders, each goaltender left unprotected must have appeared in either 10 NHL games in the 1999–2000 season or 25 games in the 1998–99 season and 1999–2000 seasons combined. A goaltender had to be in net for at least 31 minutes in each game for the game to be counted against these totals.

Looking through those old expansion drafts, I give the league credit for creating a system where Vegas (and probably Seattle) have a chance in hell during their formative years. The 90s and 00s expansion teams got ****. meow probably would have seen significant playing time for any of them.

The Penguins lost these 4 guys:
Tony Hrkac (Nashville)
Maxim Galanov (Atlanta)
"Jonas Junkka" (Minnesota)
Tyler Wright (Columbus)
No wonder none of those teams were competitive for years

The 1991 draft is a confusing one. I’d never before heard of the specifics regarding the “1991 NHL Dispersal and Expansion Drafts”, where the angry North Stars owners were granted the Sharks expansion franchise and the roster was primarily created by taking players from the North Stars, who then participated in the Expansion Draft which replenished the North Stars roster and rounded out the Sharks. Pens lost Randy Gilhen to Minnesota, another “who cares” level of transaction.
In the other early 90s drafts they lost Wendall Young and Taglianetti to Tampa, no one to the Senators, Paul Laus to Florida, and late stage Troy Loney to Anaheim. Poor Randy Gilhen had somehow found his way to Tampa and was offered up to Florida.
The entire thing is like potentially losing Alex D’Orio, Zach Trotman, or Josh Currie.

My protect list is still the same except #7F is Tanev over McCann.

Seriously it has to be Carter. I'm not risking losing a bona fide top 9 center for next season especially knowing 71 will probably miss at least 1/4 of the season

You're protecting a defenseman who plays 10 minutes a night?

If someone took Pettersson from us I'd throw a party for all 5af members
