Seattle Expansion Draft
protect: Sid, Geno, Jake, RW1, McCann, Kapanen; Letang, Dumo, Ceci; Jarry7 forwards, 3 defense, 1 goalie
8 skaters (non-goalies), 1 goalie.
trying to figure out the last forward I'd protect. if we're concerned about window of opportunity for this core, I think I protect Carter. Obviously we'll see how these playoffs play out but he seems to really gel with this team. I think if he plays next season he gives us the best chance to win the Cup compared to Tanev, Blueger and Zucker

If Malkin had come in and the team imploded immediately I would suggest working out a deal with SEA for not protecting him. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

Geno has a NMC. No dice.

Ceci is a UFA. Why would you waste a protect spot on him?

Very, very, very bad man...

Hear me out.
This is our last shot at a cup with this crew. He's got 1 year left on his contract? If it went to **** (and it didn't) why not try and fenagle a high draft pick? Assuming Seattle gets a high pick.

It's a moot point anyway. He seems to have bought into the system like the rest of them. Good for another year.

This is tough. You gotta go 7/3/1 because you have to protect letang and dumoulin (right?). But there's no 3rd D really.
8/1 does you more harm than good because you have at least 7F to protect but still have the 2D.
Unless they are comfortable losing kapanen, mccann, blueger, or tanev for nothing, they have to work out a trade. And that is without protecting zucker...
IMO you have two options.
1. Trade rust or mccann and protect all the rest but zucker
2. Make a trade to get them to take who you want them to take
So crosby, malkin, guentzel, and 4 of rust/kapanen/mccann/blueger/tanev

Remember that last time they went 8 skaters. vice 7F 3D. Do they have a 4th D that they would protect with Marino exempt?

If my options are trading away rust or mccanns final year, or losing blueger or tanev for nothing, I think I go with the trade

They don't even have a 3rd D. They'll end up protecting pettersson by default.Remember that last time they went 8 skaters. vice 7F 3D. Do they have a 4th D that they would protect with Marino exempt?

I didn't think I'd say this but they should probably protect Matheson. Maybe they can work out a deal with SEA to pick Pettersson, because I guess they need to move that contract anyway given Marino's extension.

ah yeah forgot about that. Not sure how Ceci's contract negotiation would or wouldn't be affected by the draftprotect: Sid, Geno, Jake, RW1, McCann, Kapanen; Letang, Dumo, Ceci; Jarry7 forwards, 3 defense, 1 goalie
8 skaters (non-goalies), 1 goalie.

I'd flip the names there. While Matheson has been decent, I'd relish the opportunity to get out from under that contract. And POJ could fit in the Matheson role.I didn't think I'd say this but they should probably protect Matheson. Weenie is being so nice he is only protecting 6 forwards.
Protect:
Sid
Geno
Jake
Rust
Kap
McCann
Blueger
Letang
Dumo
Jarry
If we're letting Ceci walk and not resigning, then why not protect Friedman for the 3rd guy? I'm daring Seattle to take Pettersson unless the FO likes him then protect him or Matheson.
I'm offering up all our long term contracts: Matheson, Tanev, Pettersson and I'm protecting centers over Zucker. Yes we paid a heavy price for him but that was the last FO.
Hoping Seattle takes Matheson or Pettersson, probably take ZAR. Unless we leave McCann or Blueger exposed then one of them is gone.

Having an extra protection slot on D is a huge positive. It gives us a chance to make a trade on the discount...
