No World Cup, even more rest...right back to it, new year, there will be some new guys...goal is to win the Cup...avenge the loss in '93 with a three-peat in the salary cap era...

i've erased 2012-2015 from my memory. 2011 doesn't hurt as much because of all the injuries

It's not like I don't want them to 3peat. I'll be as disappointed as anyone else if they get eliminated, especially now that I sort of forget what that feels like.
Going to be some heavy overreaction from a lot of people if/when that happens.
Name the last time Pittsburgh was eliminated from the playoffs where fans were saying "well, I'm just happy they got there..." I'm guessing the first season the Pirates got back to the playoffs after their 20 years of terrible-ness. Pittsburgh sports fans expect their teams to do well. They overreact to most disappointing ends to the season, even if they finish right about where they should.

Yinz willed this thread to 50. Good for you.
@TheHammer24 wanted a new thread, but we stuck with this one. :pop: :scared: :fist:

I think had it not been for all the injuries to the D, the Pens could've made it a series with the NYR despite FHCMJ.

That year they got rolled by the Rangers, I remember having zero playoff expectations for that team.

If I were to rank biggest playoff disappointments in the Crosby/Malkin era:

2010 vs Montreal
2013 vs Bruins
2012 vs Flyers
2008 vs Red Wings
2014 vs Rangers
2011 vs Lightning
2015 vs Rangers

Disappointment relative to expectation? Or just how sad we were to lose...?

2014 vs Rangers
2015 vs Rangers
2008 vs Red Wings
2011 vs Lightning (this one is kind of cheating since they weren't there so I put it last)

2013 vs Bruins
2014 vs Rangers
2012 vs Flyers (more frustrating than disappointing imo - peak Bylsma)
2010 vs Montreal (v. disappointing blowing a 3-1 lead but coming off 2 straight SCF appearances, meh at the time)
2015 vs Rangers
2008 vs Red Wings
2011 vs Lightning

Maybe...but they ought to be separated...

2008 Wings...I didn't expect us to win, per se...but I was very sad that we didn't...that would be one of the more polarizing ones there...

I feel like yinz are downplaying the 2008 disappointment. In hindsight it's NBD because they won in '09, but at the time that was pretty heartbreaking. Granted Detroit was a buzz-saw, but the Pens rolled through the east to make the finals as well and coming so close to forcing game 7 after getting rolled in games 1&2 in Detroit.

2013 sucked but 2012 was absolutely embarrassing. I bet most non-Pens fans don't even remember 2013

disappointing = letdown, to me at least. The Wings were a really experienced, well oiled buzzsaw that I really didn't have a ton of hope against personally. I was sad sure but not very disappointed

2008 was a young team who just wasn't quite ready. Plus they ran into a **** machine of a team in the Wings. It was only the second playoff appearance of the Crosby-era Pens (with the previous appearance ending in 5 games) and not too long before that Edzo was the coach and Tarnstrom was the leading scorer. We were happy to be there.

Bylsma needed to get canned after that 2012 performance. He had clearly lost control of that squad, Aside from clearly playing right into the Flyers' hand, you had Jordan Staal decide that he was a goal scorer and not a third line center anymore. So I say that was more appalling than disappointing,

2013 disappointment was based solely on the strength of that roster. By 2014 it seemed obvious to most that the team was going nowhere with Bylsma, so I was expecting something like that to happen.

Yes, 2008 was heartbreaking. The events following certainly erased a lot of that pain.

Losing to the Habs and Bruins; I blame myself for thinking that they could ever win again with Bylsma.

They are replaying the game on NHL Network now. I can watch more relaxed and digest a few more things. Cullen and Murray were really really good. Sheary made so many little plays. Ellis hurt his team by dressing. Subban is invisible as a fart and stinks just as bad. The Preds fourth line is hot garbage.

How many times have a team that lost in the SCF even made it back to the SCF the next year? The only one I know of in the modern era is the Pens in '09. Maybe the Oilers or Islanders once back in the '80s?

Since 1980, the following are the teams who lost in the SCF one year and got back the next year:

1983 Oilers -- lost to Islanders 4-0....beat Islanders 4-1 the next year
2008 Penguins...lost to Wings 4-2...beat Wings 4-3 the next year

Interestingly, the 99 Stars won and got back in 2000 only to lose to the Devils who then got back in 2001 and lost to the Avs.
