The goal of team building isn't to add counter-weights to players, it's to enhance everyone's ability...to bring out the best in everyone...having Malkin watering the same part of the garden where Bonino is turning over the soil is more clever by half...even though, technically, both tasks need to be done, doing them at the same time makes everything worse...

For the folks that want Malkin on wing, and I don't have a position on that either way, who do you foresee taking 2C? Someone on the roster or a FA acquisition?
Yea or maybe in the trade market. Having Malkin as an extra wing could make it easier to trade one of our better wings for center help

I just have a hard time believing an oft injured aging center coming off major knee surgery is going to be effective and stay healthy with all thats required at center.
Bring back Bonino as a 2-3 year stop gap. Let Geno run wild and Nick clean up the mess. He and Carter and handle rotating 2nd line center duties
**** Bonino.

He’s a FA center the Pens could probably afford. That’s the only reason.

Cole…

That brassard trade was the most lopsided testosterone swap in pro sports history.

Also…6 minutes in, Sheary’s like, “ok, hillbillies. You wanna throw garbage? Here’s another stick tap because we just won”

just checked. I think all the clinching dates are:

91 - May 25
92 - June 1
09 - June 12
16 - June 12
17 - June 11

And to think, in 1992, that was the first time the NHL had played in June.

Wow. I didn't realize that. How did they compress it all in? Play back to back nights?

80 games times many fewer teams. Now, it's 82 x 31. It used to be 26, 21, whatever...that's many less games. The only reason why the 1992 season leaked into June - I think - was because there was a 10-day strike over trading card rights...

It wasn't always four rounds best of 7 either. Early 80s still had a best of 5 in the first round.

How is the number of teams relevant? 82 games since 95-96 is 82 games no mater the number of teams, you just played each team more times. Each team still needs to space out 80/84/82 games over the season. You still need the same number of days, unless there were many more back-to-back games or there is now more multi-day offs.

84 games 92-94. 80 games from 74-75. 4 playoff rounds of 7 started 79-80.

2542 team games vs - say - 1680 team games. It's more TV to work around, it's more building availability issues to work around, there have been many varied in-season stoppages, etc.

1986 - 10/10/85 - 5/24/86
1987 - 10/9 to 5/31
1988 - 10/8 to 5/26
...
1991 - 10/4 to 5/25
...more teams get added
1992 - 10/3 to 6/1
1993 - 10/6 to 6/9
...more teams...
1994 - 10/5 to 6/14
1996 - 10/6 to 6/10
...more teams...
2000 - 10/1 to 6/10
2001 - 10/4 to 6/9
2002 - 10/3 to 6/13

It's just a little bit tougher to deal with all the logistics when you have more teams...
