My hunch is this team is good enough to make the playoffs but probably not good enough to make a serious run at the Cup.

“Bad” is loaded. We have infrastructure that prevents badness.
But this is some 2015 stuff right here.

What happens in the 30-40 games Malkin is destined to miss this year? It’s one of those things where we give a bunch of hungry WBS guys a shot…they perform…and then we go with Rodrigues instead in the playoffs? Or is this the year things finally go to hell when they’re supposed to, on paper?
I guess what’s the optimist’s excuse when they look at this roster?

It’s a shame Halak wasn’t available this off-season

I’ve heard that Domingue is a really really good locker room guy.

DeSmith isn't bad, he's just not great. Dominguez is actually bad. He isn't even solid for the AHL. He is one of those guys that you legit wonder how they keep getting signed. Not as far, but basically down the same road as Jack Johnson getting a PTO in Colorado head scratcher.Worse than DeSmith? If not, this doesn’t matter to me.Ugh, Domingue is really bad...

He seems like a nice guy. Tries hard. Loves the game.

That's where I'm at. They aren't awful, but they aren't great... stars are aging and oft injured. They are middle of the pack.My hunch is this team is good enough to make the playoffs but probably not good enough to make a serious run at the Cup.

What backup isn't? That's why they get jobs. Domingue is, say, the 135th best goalie in the world, but is the 38th funniest. He's in.I’ve heard that Domingue is a really really good locker room guy.
This is more aggressive than I mean it to be, but I hammered city.
Strangely, CDS is better than this guy...which is odd...Domingue is a mild upgrade on Lagace...

So you are saying he is not a 1B to Jarry? Perhaps my biggest wish this offseason...

This team has shown that they can pucker up tighter than a dolphin’s butt when things get tight. Having a clown around is a good thing. And I’m not calling him a clown because he catches right - I have much worse words to call him. What backup isn't? That's why they get jobs. Going into the playoffs last season, I think most people could have reasonably said that a run to the conference finals would be considered a success. We weren't going to beat Tampa, so get that out of your minds right now.
Divisional playoffs, facing NYI and WAS was the best case scenario. I think BOS would have given us fits.
With that said, the Penguins fell into a worst case scenario. The referees had Don Cherry's hands up their tooshes playing them like puppets, their 1A goalie, coming off a solid season, realized he wasn't potty trained and made a mess all over the ice, and the pull up diaper of Casey DeSmith got hurt.
Not sure what you do in the off-season to correct that. Not sure if DeSmith would have saved the team, but regular season Jarry would have gotten us past the NYI. If you're Hextall, you hope Jarry learned a lesson, lifts some mental weights in the offseason, and have a run at it again. They're "stuck" with the superstar trio so you hope to squeeze a bit more juice out of them before it's a lost cause. The role players are just that. Changing them around really doesn't help what happened last year, nor will it help that much this year. Not in a significant way.

Domingue’s NHL and AHL stats are basically the same. Don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.

I also think we’re in a paradox where we have to give Jarry a chance to blow it again, and it makes sense that we didn’t screw with his brain by bringing in a guy like Halak which would just create a season long controversy.
DeSmith can win games in December and Jarry has to feel like *the guy*. So here we are.
