Congratulations to Rust, has played well and I think he's shown he can make a career at this level.
Always nice to see young guys play their way into the NHL from the minors.

Either way, Admin still wasn't one for publicly enforcing rules. He'd have is cronies do it.

While i think Wilson is the best of the bunch, i love bryan rust as a player.
I don't really like using TK as a comparison. Rust is a much more well rounded player... better hands, stronger on the puck, reliable defensively... trying to think of a good league comparison but coming up blank.

big rust fan. guys on the other team seem to hate him more than it seems they should. that's the tiebreaker between him and the other guys.

I think it's how hard he works "through" you...you can't "get away" with anything...how do I put this...? You ever play pickup and someone is just like working way too hard on the forecheck and you can't even get away with simple misdirection or puck protection plays that would ward off 99% of all comers...you get the one guy that stops on a dime, turns and starts whacking your stick and then he brings his body through your hands and takes the puck before you can setup...? That's Rust. There's no break. There's no "whew, lost him..."
The higher you go in hockey, the more predictable the game becomes. The less randomness occurs. The things that back off most forecheckers, don't back off Rust. He's a good mix of tireless worker with a great stick and a better head for the game than his predecessors...and he has a bee in his bonnet when he's out there...that's annoying as **** to play against...even if he didn't say one word out there, I'd be annoyed. Not because he's doing anything wrong, he's clean as a whistle to date, but it's still so annoying when you can't shake that guy with an ordinary or even slightly above ordinary effort...it sucks...

How long is that sustainable over a career? Age or apathy has to catch up, right?Source of the post He's a good mix of tireless worker with a great stick

I wonder that as well. He really figuratively, but almost literally, works at 110% every shift. Can you make a career of that? Quite possibly. Tyler Kennedy did, but he didn't know any better. Brendan Gallagher works like this and sticks around. Derek MacKenzie made a career of this type of play with less skill. Ryan Callahan you see is starting to wear out, but he's done this and more because he throws his body around even more...Nikolai Kulemin might be a comparable...Cogliano,,,
So there's guys that just do this...and you limit the minutes and you just see how far you can ride them...
We'll see what kind of player he becomes in years two and three, that's when you really start to establish what you are...the rookie exuberance wears off, everyone has the book on you, you know the league works...he's got a contract now...so we'll see...if he can keep up something like this, gravy. If not, I trust that he'll be able to "work smart" and still be largely effective...it's a really good question though...

Cool, I hope he keeps the pedal to the floor. He's a great addition. Thanks for the reply.

weirdly strong praise from mikey who recently compared Rust to TK
edit never mind, just searched it and MR25 brought up the comparison first.

The player I'd compare Rust to is Martin Straka (who, of course, had much better hands). The player I'd compare Kennedy to is Hagelin. Basically, Hagelin is TK with a brain.

Or a fraction thereof...I agree with that. Rust thinks the game too well to be Kennedy. Hagelin is always in a hurry, but only sometimes does he have a place to be...that's more Kennedy-esque...but I've been happy with Hagelin overall, not the 15 feet in front of the other net, but everywhere else, I think he's been strong.
He loves to get that sick flow going out there too...skates for days...

Hagelin is an effective set up man, which was obviously not in the TK toolkit.
