What's an equal trade for Kunitz at this point?

If JR feels that the chances of retaining Perron beyond this season are slim to none, I suppose he will act rather sooner than later. I'd certainly prefer to keep Perron.

Yeah I'm not on the "trade Perron" train whatsoever. He's gonna have a good season.

As would I. He's 9 years younger than Kunitz, and could probably be signed for 4-5M a year, depending on what he does this year. I also hate the fact we gave up a 1st for Perron and he may be dealt or leave as a UFA. But that seems to be how things are playing out so far.

Giving up a 1st round pick for Perron, I expected them to have a long-term plan of him replacing Kunitz, and being resigned to a new deal this year. While Perron will give the 3rd line depth for now, I'm not sure it will inspire him to want to resign here.

I could see him not getting any raise. If next year's FA market goes like this years... and if he has another 20g/40pt type season... I can see him taking a cut from the $3.8M for 1 or 2 years. If he has a 30g/60pt season then things will be different.

In any case, I don't think JR would want to risk losing him for nothing. So he either extends his contract this fall or he's gone.

The Byfuglien thing is picking up some more steam this morning. I saw Madden with a comment, Travis Yost a comment last night, Mike Colligan mentioned a few weeks ago Pens definitely kicked tires this summer. I still don't see it happening because of his cost to resign, but just playing here for a minute.

If the Penguins could fit him in the cap this year and beyond, what you be willing to give up for him? I would imagine someone like Pouliot or Matt Murray would have to be going back the other way in a deal.

Kunitz, Scuderi (salary purposes only), Pouliot, and a 2nd is my first thought. I doubt that is enough though. 2 years of Kunitz, Pouliot, and a 2nd seems like not enough.

Two things. Winnipeg is not in need of a goalie prospect. Murray is very unlucky to be moved.

What is the "best" site for transactions? NHL.com is hit and miss as to what they list, ESPN and TSN are the same...

Even if Byfuglien was signed for 5 more years at $5.2M the line highlighted below would make this deal a non-starter. Him only being a rental means that I would have you escorted out of the building for that suggestion.

It would be next to impossible. Here's the scenario I worked out on my cap sheet:
Kunitz, Scuderi, Pouliot, and a 2nd for Byfuglien.

Let's assume the Penguins resign Byfuglien, and he gets 7M a year. Not a stretch based on what he makes and the overpayment that occurs.

It's not really a problem this year, but next year.....here's what I have in terms of resigning UFA/RFAs

Cap rises to 73.5M for 2016-2017 (obviously an estimate)
Maata signing a two year bridge deal at 3.5M for 2 years
Perron resigned for 4 years at 4M a year
Bennett resigns for 2 years, 1.5M a year
Murray becomes backup at 800K a year
Plotnikov resigns for 2 years, 2.5M a year
Those estimates are just based on guess on production this year. Some are high, some are low, but average out to be fair I think.

11 forwards: Crosby, Malkin, Bonino, Fehr, Kessel, Hornqvist, Perron, Dupuis, Bennett, Sprong, Plotnikov
5 defenseman: Letang, Maata, Byfuglien, Dumoulin, Cole
2 goalies: Fleury, Murray

Short about 4 players, and my rough estimate with those resignings has 707K left for 4 players with 73.5M cap. Only other way to possibly help make it work is to trade Dupuis over the summer next year, or trade Fleury and hope Murray can handle the job. A team with team with Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Letang, and Byfuglien all making 6M and above just don't really seem to work.

ESPN is actually pretty decent in this regard: http://espn.go.com/nhl/transactions

TSN is probably a little better: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/transactions

The front page of Eliteprospects is good as well, but without some filtering, you have to look through every league in the world...I like to keep up on some AHL/high Europe stuff, so I like it the most...but it's not for everyone... http://www.eliteprospects.com/

I'm confused on why if we're in need of a defenseman, we are talking Byfuglien.

Is Byfuglien this year's Chris Stewart?

Or is Stewart's name going to pop back up again like it does every year?

The only way I'd feel comfortable getting Buff is only giving up Kunitz and Scuderi, and you gotta know going in that it just won't be possible to sign him after this year. Pure rental.

if we get Buff, you can be sure you won't find a single hot dog or hamburger in all of Pittsburgh
