My only concern with Carter is his legs. Hoping this isn't another Marleau situation where his center has to try and drag him down the ice.

So Carter is still playing on a contract he signed with the Flyers, but never actually got a paycheck from the Flyers during the contract. Towards the end of his 3 year, $15MM extension he signed an 11 year, $58MM extension on 11/10/10. On 6/23/11 he was traded to the BJs and then was traded again on 2/23/12 to LA for Jack Johnson. Weirdness. Also, 11 year contracts are dumb.

I have no real issues with the move beyond there being another year on the contract. I'd prefer to not be on the hook for $2.6MM for potential dead weight while continuing to navigate the flat cap world.

I doubt he would be dead weight next year. And that's the going rate for a third liner with a pulse.

If he puts up points, I won't care about a sub-$3m salary.

Side note, the Kings salary cap breakdown is amazing. Dion Phaneuf buyout, Jeff Carter retained salary, $6.25MM this season for terminating Kovalchuk's contract, and termination fees for Mike Richards until 2031-32.

That’s a good point. Sceiviour’s $1.2MM will be off the books. Same for the $2MM Jugs buyout. There will be some wiggle room for things.

I have zero idea how this contract stuff works, but according to Reddit comments (historically 100% factual and trustworthy), rumor is Carter is going to retire after this year. If that happens, the Pens would actually have a a positive cap recapture benefit with LA and Columbus paying recapture penalties.

How do the BJs have anything to do with this? They had him for 8 months and didn’t retain salary when they traded him to LA. This is suddenly NFL salary cap level nonsense.

I went to the same local bar in south Jersey like every Friday of my mid 20’s.

Carter and Richards had a long running thing with a couple of bar tenders there. The hookups were brokered by Richards’ coke dealer. Carter’s girl was convinced they had a future together. I haven’t checked his Wikipedia but I don’t think they made it work.

I got it now. Recapture penalty because the contract is front loaded. Cap hit of $5.3MM but last three years have actual pay of $3MM, $2MM, and $2MM. Pens get rewarded for eating more in cap space than what the contract is actual paying, all teams he played for get penalized for benefiting from the cap hit shenanigans.
