But then he takes PT from players in WBS.

And he's definitely not good enough to be a teacher role there.

Bad move cap wise. Bury him for 3 years.
I don't understand.
Someone can check my math, I'm going round a little...

So if you bury him his last 3 years, his hit (assuming the minimum wouldn't move) would be 2 million. We save 800k this year and next. The 3rd year is basically a wash.

Now on top of that, we have an additional 3 years of 1 million in dead cap space.

As a team that spends to the cap, I believe burying him was the proper response in this matter.
Gotcha. Maybe they wanted to save additional space in the short term what with the window presumably still open, idk.

Well, we don't really know that...Scuderi and Rierden are coaches in the league right now, so is Alain Nasreddine...

I would guess Jack probably isn't a great coach, but we don't necessarily know that to be fair...

That said, it's best just to move on...no sense have him dragging around and taking on all that real money...

Correct, but bury him and you have roughly 2 million dead cap because you can bury somewhere around 1.something. Buying him out gives a dead cap of 1.2.

But we could tell Scuderi was, at the very least, a smart player who didn't have the legs to compete in a post-2012 NHL.

Jack Johnson has been absolute **** his entire career.

2 years from now the Pens will not be or care about being a cap team. The next two years are all that matter before contracts for key players start expiring.

2019-20: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
2020-21: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
2021-22: $750,000 + $375,000 = $1,125,000

This is what I was going off of, but I don't know if it's right.

2022-23 $916,667 $1,916,667
2023-24 $916,667 $916,667
2024-25 $916,667 $916,667
2025-26 $916,667 $916,667

I agree. Cap hits:

Burying him:
20/21: 2.175
21/22: 2.125
22/23: 2.125

Buyout:
20/21: 1.167
21/22: 1.167
22/23: 1.917
23/24: 0.917
24/25: 0.917
25/26: 0.917

So basically:
20/21: Save 1.008
21/22: Save 0.958
22/23: Save 0.208
23/24: Cost 0.917
24/25: Cost 0.917
25/26: Cost 0.917

So save $1M cap the first two years, even, blow $1M cap the out three. 6 years of dead space vs 3 years.

I mean in the 2023-2024 season Crosby is 36, Malkin could be in Russia, so the 900k cost then doesn't mean much. I guess if the window is 3 years, you're better off saving, but I think I'd still bury and wait for the contract to disappear.

I can get the reasoning here, but if in 4 years you're still contending and spending to the cap, it's a negative.

But that's really it, the really money savings...we see how tight teams are being right now...we're talking about wiping a million bucks off the books this year and next, right? Just about? That's much better than burying the full $3 mil in the minors, because you still gotta pay that full real cash...

And it's to a guy that's just eating up time down there, and you don't know how he would respond to that either...he could have a big poopy pants party and not help either of our two prospects haha

You know how everyone hated Tanev's term... Johnson's cap hit now goes one year farther out than Tanev's.

And yet it's still better than having to pay Johnson 3.25 for the next 3.

I'm just happy that I won't have to see his name in every post when the team isn't playing well.

They save real cash money. The cap hit savings is better these first two years (aka when the Pens are still semi-competitive and in win now mode).

2 years from now Malkin/Rust/Kapanen/McCann/Letang/Riikola are all UFA, with Zucker/Dumoulin/Jarry the year after that.. The JJ cap carry over does not matter at all when those players contracts expire.

Geno will be 37, Sid and Letang 36, Dumolin and Zucker entering the mid 30s before their deals expire.. The window is 2 years left and then its a demo and full rebuild, hopefully. The buyout maximizes the cap savings for the next two seasons to try to get one more Cup.
