Oh I prefer 8 too but it seems to be the trend in sports to expand the playoffs. I figure shorten the season by 4 games and add a best of 3 or 5 play in roundyou had me until the last sentence. the stanley cup playoffs are the best in sports, don't fix it if it ain't broke.. 8 from each conference

I hate the trend in sports to keep throwing in more playoff teams
8, in all honesty, is too many. A team could dominate in the regular season and lose because the 8 seed who likely had a losing record in the regular season (considering OTL) had a hot goalie
at that point it just becomes the NCAA tournament; which is good for drama but bad for competition. Why play 82 regular season games if you're going to devalue them by letting everyone in the playoffs?
NFL going to 7 teams, the MLB introducing the one game wildcard playoff, NHL going with 10 teams etc. They're all annoying
I know that these things have grown over time (MLB never had the wildcard before the 90s) but if we're letting every team into the playoffs (including those with losing records), what's the point of the regular season?

The NHL switched to 16 playoff teams in 1980. There were 21 teams. It's remained at 16 teams despite the league expanding to 31 teams. I'm okay with more teams in the playoffs.

I'm not. Personally, over half the teams making the playoffs is already too many. At least it'll be 50% next year

It's a NASCAR channel but the first two minutes of this video talks on this pretty well:I hate the trend in sports to keep throwing in more playoff teams

I think it could be done in an exciting way that doesn’t destroy the sanctity of the 16 team playoff. Don’t be afraid of change ya geezers.

Playoff hockey doesn't need to change, though. It's already perfect.

Sure it’s great. A wild card or a 3 game series prior to the traditional playoffs could be awesome too though.

I'd be more partial to in an season tournament like the nba discussed than altering playoffs. They're already perfectSure it’s great. A wild card or a 3 game series prior to the traditional playoffs could be awesome too though.

If you can't be good enough in the regular season to be better than more than half of the teams in your conference, you shouldn't be competing for the championship. You've had 82 games to prove yourself (56 this season). That's plenty of time. The only sport's increase I like is baseball's because it keeps more teams involved as we go through the dog days of July and August. If you're a Padres fan and the Dodgers already have a 12-game lead on July 15, at least you still have a chance to grab one of the two wildcards. Plus, it makes for a better race and the possibility of tiebreaker games on the extra day of the season.

They'll solve that by allowing the top six of each division into the postseason.

I thought they said top 4, then all play in to a semifinal matchup

So there will be three too many Canadian teams in the playoffs and then one will undeservedly make it to the semi-finals?I thought they said top 4, then all play in to a semifinal matchup

Highly overrated. Flyers are clearly the top team. Capitals, and bruins are still good but past their peak. Pens are past their peak and maybe not good anymore. Buffalo is not good. Islanders are a middle of the pack team. Rangers might be good but might be a year away. Devils have a long way to go.Thats a tough division, jesus.
I honestly think the pens have a better shot at making the playoffs with Boston and Buffalo than they would have with Carolina and columbus.

2 teams were going to be in a tough spot no matter what. I would have put St. Louis in Central and Dallas in West but there were going to be teams misplaced.

Colorado, St. Louis, Minnesota to the Central, Dalls, Miami, Tampa to the South/West. I assume they considered it and had their reasons to dismiss it.

Scheduling will be interesting. Travel isn’t an issue for the east where they can bus everywhere, but I remember them floating the idea of baseball style (or even minor league hockey style) series to help cut down on travel.
