Glass was useless. Cooke was a 3rd liner. Petrovicky only played 31 games.

That is the beginning and end of my point. I named names to further the point. I know Reaves isn't a goon in the vein of the guys that I mentioned. I mentioned them because that is who the Pens have added as 4th line guys for "protection" in the past. Given their track record, I hope you can see why I would be skeptical when they add another guy for "protection".

I think I'm being fairly clear here.

GMJR might know, but we don't know if Kunitz is coming back for another tour. Reaves provides that ability to hang and bang (Hulk Hogan reference) on the forecheck in the corners. Even if Kuinitz does return, he's....old.

You're right. I probably don't. I've only seen him play a handful of games. I've seen him do some good things (the goal against the Pens), but I've also seen him do dumb things.

That is pretty much the reason why I am leaning on my past experience when the Pens have added guys for protection.

The deterrent thing is tough to quantify. No question that cheap crap and scraps will continue to happen even with him on the ice. The dark-matter portion of the equation is how many other cheap shots does he prevent - those that don't occur because some opponent decided in his head not to do something out of Fear of Reaves. These are the random face-punches, shin whacks and such. In that sense, you can't just compare the count of significant incidents with him in vs. him out.

Another factor is HCMS's disposition - he's not some feel good snowflake panderer. He and JR had a pretty short window (courtesy of a cup win) to chart out the nature and needs of the team. Another short window, but they are operating with a lot more info about the what's and why's of personnel decisions.
