I assumed Maatta was just trying to help the team when he bashed Letang in the head. But then, powerplay, so, yeah.

His stick was on the ice tying up the Wild player's stick, so the Wild player's legs "gave out". It was one of the worst calls of the night, considering Plotnikov was getting hooked and tripped later in the 3rd.

When did a broken stick become an automatic slashing penalty? Plotnikov's slashing penalty seemed like a joke to me. From what I remember, he had both hands on his stick and used it to get position along the boards for the puck. The other player had his stick there too, and it broke when Plotnikov put his stick down over it. 2 minute penalty because the stick "broke".

I semi-understand the automatic call, I mean if you slashed it hard enough to snap in two, well... But I hate the basically automatic call if you slash it out of his hands. If you have a weak grip that could happen pretty easily, and boom, 2 minutes.

The problem that I have with the automatic penalty is that it's far too easy to break sticks anymore. I've seen light taps just snap these things in half.

It's tough sometimes when there's a smoking gun to not arrest someone...in an ideal world, a ref would see the slash and determine its strength. Sometimes that can be difficult to ascertain at live speed...
