I think I should put my focus on the 2018 car.

Hulkenberg finally gets on the board and Verstappen poops the suitcase.

My other F1 fantasy team is Hamilton, Stroll, Verstappen, & Sainz. Two crashed each other out and a third went headfirst into the wall. Not a good weekend.

20 races over 8 months. One would imagine travel being the biggest spend for a team, what is the realistic expense in running a team for a season and what is the realistic financial gain in return?

You know the old joke: How do you make a small fortune in motor racing? Start with a large one.

The big teams are spending in the $300 million a year range, easy. And that might not even include the engine costs on the part of the manufacturer-constructors like Ferrari and Mercedes and Renault; engine dev can easily add 50% of the budget on by itself. The smaller budget teams are probably a tick or so over the $100 million mark. You could run a competitive 2-car team in IndyCar for a full year on the hospitality budget of a Ferrari or a Red Bull.

Ten or more years ago, Ferrari's annual F1 budget was estimated to be $550 million. From a company that at the time was only selling around six or seven thousand new cars a year.

Once prize money and TV money is doled out, most teams break even on the year. I think last year Williams and RBR were they only two teams to turn a profit.

No one had this race down as a 1.5 multiplier.

Based on the salary numbers used to set the teams here, Sainz is indeed the ROI leader with a value of 14.50 points earned thus far per million dollars of salary. Numbers below. Magnussen is second at 11 points per million, and Vettel is third at 8.05 points per million.
