Making crockpot lasagna for this week. The last time I made it, it ended up a little dry because the noodles soaked up most of the moisture. What I did this time was add chopped mushrooms to the sauce, which were barely cooked. I figure they will add moisture as they cook down.

I could put this in the "grinds my gears" thread, but I think it's better here: I am displeased at the naming of recent aircraft carriers. Aircraft carriers originally started out named after battles (e.g. Lexington, Yorktown, Ticonderoga, Belleau Wood, Antietam) or prior navy ships of renown (e.g. ...

That is begging for action. We had a guy in lab that did that... we asked him once about it and the reason he did it was because he didn't want to look bad to the boss that he had gone home for the day (he'd usually leave around 4 or 5). The person in question is a shareholder here, so there isn't ...

Hmmm... the cars look pretty closely bunched together. If it were a practice session, I would expect everyone to be more spread out. It looks like the cars are racing. Also, there isn't much of a crowd in the grandstands, but if it were just practice I would expect pretty much no one to be there.

New view of the SpaceX landing attempt from the barge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDF2DQ5rAh0 Looks like one of the landing legs broke or collapsed from the landing, and the stage toppled to that side. Supposedly Elon Musk said something about the throttle on the center Merlin engine (the one re...

I have a coworker who doesn't turn anything off when he leaves for the day. His office lights are on, his desk lamp is often left on, and he's usually still logged into his computer with multiple apps left open (for example, anyone walking past can read his email). Every day it looks like he not so ...

It's a history thread. Does this stuff have to be relevant? The officer I knew that did it was a major and that was 5 years ago so it had been a while. Oh, sorry, I wasn't questioning the relevancy of your post. I was honestly just wondering if any F-14s (other than the Iranian ones) were still aro...

Are there any F-14s left anywhere? My understanding was that the Navy was pretty thorough in scrapping them because they didn't want even the remotest chance of any spare parts making their way to the Shah-era F-14s purchased by Iran.

The Marines are still carrying institutional memories of being effectively abandoned by the US Navy (and its aircraft carriers) for several months on Guadalcanal in 1942. Ever since then, it has been an integral part of their battle plan to take their own air support with them over the beach, which...

The billions of dollars spent on the jet already are gone. Buh-bye. The hundreds of billions of dollars that are planned to be spent on the program over the next five decades have not. Be smart. Use the money that's already been invested in the F-35 and migrate that technology to a proper mix of co...

Better video of the SpaceX near landing, including the ensuing RUD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhMSzC1crr0 If you watch the top of the stage, you can see one of the RCS (reaction control system) thrusters blasting away in vain trying to keep the stage upright, but it can't quite manage to hold i...

No. I was a huge CART/Indycar fan before the split, and I will carry an unbridled hatred for Tony George all of the remaining days of my life. Current Indycar racing is a hollow shell of what it once was, and I don't pay much attention at all.

Today's primary mission for SpaceX went flawlessly, and the unmanned Dragon spacecraft is on its way to the ISS. The first stage landed on the drone ship but "excess lateral velocity" caused the stage to tip over. It's not clear yet whether it tipped over and stayed on the deck or tipped over and fe...

i find it hard to believe the pens would pay two coaches not to coach next year
Why not? Based on on-ice performance, they're already paying at least two defensemen not to pay defense.

Yeah, so close. One of the weather rules is that anvil clouds (basically thunderstorms) cannot be within a certain distance, and it looks like a nearby storm just managed to drift into that radius. Because the launch window to the ISS is instantaneous (i.e., the rocket must launch exactly on time to...

Woo, got my CharGriller barrel grill Saturday. I seasoned the grates in the oven with some fresh bacon drippings. Any other suggestions before I fire her up tonight and cook a sirloin steak?
